I smell a lawsuit!
While I'm sure the folks at the county level are doing this to pander to voters in an election year, they ought to remember that it was the voters who opted for this fund in the first place.
Also, I doubt this has little impact on the stadium construction.
| Quote: | | A California county has surprised both the San Francisco 49ers and city of Santa Clara leaders by pulling $30 million in tax funds from the new 49ers stadium. |
| Quote: | The team and the city said voters had specifically earmarked redevelopment money to help build the $1.2 billion stadium and that the county has no right to keep it.
The 49ers and Santa Clara officials will craft an official response this week. Lawsuits are likely, according the newspaper. |
| Quote: | | The move was so unexpected that Santa Clara leaders claim it was done in violation of public notice laws. |

honestly, I am not a huge fan of the new design or the new location. I live pretty much directly in between the Stick and Santa Clara and so the move hasnt been a huge deal to me but I have a sneaking suspicion that they are going to screw something up. I think that the one side with the freaking mall ( ) will reflect the sun into my/the team's eyes or something incredibly dumb like that.
I love the stick! I dont think we should leave, especially now that we are finally good again. Save the Stick! everyone loves to hate on it but it is honestly my 3rd home _________________

I love the Stick but I would enjoy a new stadium too. The problem to me is the site. Santa Clara blows. Also its a long ways away from San Francisco. I just wish they would keep it in San Francisco because I think it takes away from the game if it isn't in the city or at least close to it _________________

It is close, less than an hour away. It isn't like they are moving to Stockton, Santa Clara is a fairly nice area, and will be nicer once the revenue from a new stadium comes in.
Second, it does not take away from the game at all. The Giants/Jets share a stadium in New Jersey. |

Ok it isn't in San Francisco... The San Francisco Giants are IN San Francisco, the Warriors are about to be IN San Francisco. So you would rather go to Santa Clara than San Francisco?
Yes it does take away from the game. Part of the fun of going to the game is going into The City before and after the game. It wont be any where close to the same _________________

Yes it does take away from the game. Part of the fun of going to the game is going into The City before and after the game. It wont be any where close to the same | I guess I don't count going out before or after as part of the game. I don't care where I go to watch football (as long as it isn't too far away). If I want to go to the city, I can do that any day of the week. It costs less than $4 on BART. I think a new stadium regardless of specific location, will add to the game experience. Better accommodations, better sound, better scoreboards/replays, way better food, better area, cleaner and nicer surrounding, etc. If you want to go to the city after, it would take you less than 30 minutes to drive there.
It isn't like Candlestick is right near the wharf or a great part of downtown; it is in a really crappy area, with bad parking logistics. It will be a joy to not have to go there anymore. The only reason people are nostalgic about the park itself is because of the history of the team. If the Yankees can get a new home, so can the Niners. (Not comparing the location there, just the new park) |

| And to answer your first question, yes I would absolutely rather attend a game in Santa Clara than in the city. It is a safer place to bring a family, and traffic will be way easier to handle than going out to the Stick. If the only reason you don't like the idea is that you like going out to in the city, then that is a pretty strange reason unless you live out of the bay area. You can go to the city anytime. |

Yeah but most people who come to a Giants game usually make a day of it and enjoy the city and then head to the game or go to the game and go out after. I am saying you really cant call them the San Francisco Giants if they aren't there. I think the same thing would happen if they had done that with the Niners.
I agree the Stick is falling apart and it is more of a nostalgia based want than anything, just wish it would stay closer to the city. I think they need a new one too but i just wish they had worked with the city more to keep it there. I really have never felt unsafe in the city besides the tenderloin but that is more of a subjective look. Plus as a whole I find the South Bay to be extremely overrated and mediocre as compared to the rest of the bay _________________

I think they worked with the city long enough and got no where. To be perfectly honest the 49ers got screwed by the City. The Giants got a nice new stadium in a very sweet location. With all the money both teams bring to the area they could have done a better job at trying to keep the Niners there.Eddie D. was promised a new stadium in 80's or early 90's the city hasn't followed through. _________________

^^This
I understand the history of Candlestick and the memories it has created, but it's old as dirt and compared to about 98% of other pro sport venues, just flat-out sucks. Horrible traffic congestion in/out of the game, horrible seating (it used to be a baseball stadium and still is structured to fit a diamond in it), loud-obnoxious-drunk fans that hopefully will be priced out of most games and it's located in the roughest, most dangerous part of the city... it's time for a major upgrade and I'm ecstatic about it! _________________

By nature it is not as safe as most other towns. I don't think the South Bay is all that great either, but that is part of the reason they want the park. It will help bring revenue into an area in need of some renovation. As far as the name of the team, like I said the NY Giants, and NY Jets play in New Jersey, not just a different city but state as well. They are not the only example either. The Cowboys don't play in Dallas for example. |

Candlestick Park is one of the worst pro-sport venues out there. It needs to go. The place is a flat out dump. The new stadium should really be a non-topic by now.
The location of Candlestick is an absolute nightmare as well. It is in one of the worst parts of San Francisco. Just getting to the 101 from the stadium can take forever. Then you get the freeway traffic because that is the only freeway in the area. From the stadium to Fisherman's Warf can easily take 45 mins post-game because of all of the traffic funneling onto the 101. It will likely take just as long to get there from Santa Clara on a similar day - maybe 15 mins longer. From Santa Clara you have the 101 or 280 if you want to go up the peninsula and 680 or 880 if you are going inland.
The 49ers struck gold getting to move to Santa Clara. The city is leaps and bounds nicer than SF in just about every way. The city of San Francisco had years to try and make something work within the city limits and drug their feet. Its their loss. _________________

And this coming from a guy that lives in the North Bay that would be looking at a 70+ mile commute now. Hell, I drive farther to visit the in-laws, not gonna whine about a 1 1/2 to 2 hour drive to see someone I really love I will miss the old park nostalgically just as I miss my first house but I wouldn't dream of going back. _________________

| The lost of the magic of being in San Francisco is bigger than you might imagine. The city holds a special allure and atomosphere that Santa clara will not replace. Even though Candlestick is not close to wharf you can dine on the water after the game nearby. As for Santa Clara the closest water is Alviso if you have ever been there it does not remotely resemble San Francisco or its magic. Alviso used to be sort of a swamp with all the ripe smells. So moving from San Francisco is not my first choice even though it doesn't effect me |
