http://www.mlbtraderumors.com/2012/11/blue-jays-to-sign-melky-cabrera.html
Absolute steal here for the Jays, who may be the favorites in the AL East.
1. Reyes, SS
2. Cabrera, LF
3. Bautista, RF
4. Encarnacion, 1B
5. Lawrie, 3B
6. Lind/Buck/whoever, DH
7. d'Arnaud/Arenciaba/Buck, C
8. Rasmus, CF
9. Bonafacio/Izturis, SS
EDIT: Just going to do some back-of-the-hand WAR add ups:
Lineup
1. Reyes - 5 WAR
2. Cabrera - 3 WAR
3. Bautista - 6 WAR
4. Encarnacion - 3 WAR
5. Lawrie - 4 WAR
6. DH - 1.5 WAR
7. C - 2 WAR
8. Rasmus - 1.5 WAR
9. 2B - 2 WAR
Rotation
1. Johnson - 4 WAR
2. Morrow - 3 WAR (maybe a touch aggressive)
3. Buehrle - 2 WAR
4. Romero - 2 WAR
5. Happ - 1 WAR
I'll throw the bullpen 4 WAR total.
Lineup adds up to 28, rotation gives you another 12, and bullpen adds 4 more. Total of 44. Replacement team wins about 47 games, putting them at 91. _________________

Shoulda gone all out and offered Hamilton $150 million.
Melky is coming off a career year and will likely regress. _________________

The Blue Jays now have a ton of depth with Cabrera, Rasmus and Bautista in the OF, Rajai Davis as a super sub, and Anthony Gose a short flight away. Cabrera probably won't be a 4.5 WAR player this next year, but he might be worth 3.5 and fills the only real hole in that lineup. _________________

Melky is coming off a career year and will likely regress. | They are paying as if he had a market value of 1.6 WAR/year. I'd say he's a good bet to do substantially better than that. _________________

I'm not saying its a bad deal because its not, but this is a half-assed effort of going all out.
Pull an Angels and sign Josh, not the 2nd tier guy. _________________

Melky Cabrera isn't THAT much worse than Josh Hamilton, you're getting Cabrera at a discount, you're paying for Cabrera's prime years (as opposed to Hamilton's decline phase), and you aren't sacrificing the future of the roster.
Actually, as much as we think the Jays are 'going for it' (and they clearly do want to win the division in 2013), what have they given away from their future roster? Marsinick was stuck behind Gose in the eyes of the organization. Nicolino might be their 5th best pitching prospect.
The Angels went for it and sacrificed their future to do so. The Jays just made a whole lot of smart baseball moves. _________________

Ken Rosenthal is also suggesting another SP.. To add to this signing, I don't think he repeats last year, but he sees pitches and if he and Reyes get on base the beef of order are gonna see quality pitches. This IMO is a role signing.
I don't see how Josh Hamilton matters here.. We have power, we need high OBP guys to grind pitchers and set table.. Reyes/Cabrera on paper fit this.. Thank You AA !! |

Good time to be a blue jays fan.
Would be nice to see Lind and Buck traded but besides that I am ecstatic over the offseason. Unreal. _________________

Looks like AA is going to go for it this year. For his sake I hope Johnson can stay healthy and be the ace for them. _________________

That'd be a horrible idea. Melky provides them a great bat at the top of the order for much cheaper than Hamilton. They don't need to spend that kind of coin for another power hitter. They've already got several of those. _________________ Come Follow My Oakland Multi-Sport Franchise! |
