| ProfootballFocus wrote: | It took me a while to notice it, but when I did it stood out as one of the best plays I saw all season, and good enough that it was worth bringing attention to here. It was made by a player who is fast becoming one of my favorite players to watch in the league, Tyvon Branch.
In Week 3 of the season the Raiders hosted the Jets. Having taken the lead 7-0, the Raiders were presented with the Jets offense showing an empty backfield. Mark Sanchez was in the shotgun, and LaDainian Tomlinson and Dustin Keller were split out as receivers, Keller wide right and Tomlinson in the slot to the left.
As Oakland tends to do, they locked up in man coverage with each of the five receivers the Jets had lined up. They got even more aggressive when they decided to send Rolando McClain and Matt Giordano on a blitz off the right side along with the front four linemen. This was an overload blitz, with six rushers coming and just five linemen blocking, but the Jets had the perfect play called to counter it. The Raiders call left everybody in man coverage on an island with no help in behind, and if the blitz didn’t get there, anybody beaten badly was in trouble.
The play was a bubble screen to LaDainian Tomlinson who was able to use the body of D’Brickashaw Ferguson to shield Jerome Boyd from getting in on the play. The Jets kicked their LG back and out to pick up the blitz while Ferguson quickly made his way out to block in the flat. McClain was actually pretty quick at reading the screen when he saw Ferguson release out to get the block on Boyd, but he turned himself in circles chasing the play and ended up falling off the tackle 5 yards downfield. Things went from bad to worse, taking a turn for the catastrophic for Oakland as Joe Porter made a pretty ugly attempt at a tackle after coming off his man.
From that point, Tomlinson was off to the races, with just Plaxico Burress and Chris Johnson out in front of him. Johnson gets blocked to the inside by Plaxico, giving LT a clean run down the sideline to the end zone. Johnson gives chase to try and make up for giving up the sideline but is knocked out of the play by Santonio Holmes at about the 15-yard line, before suddenly Branch streaks into view and puts Tomlinson out of bounds inside the 5. Read the rest of the article here . . . |
Wow. Great hustle play. PFF is giving Branch a ton of love this off season. Any comments Raider Nation? _________________ 2013 Mancrush: DT Richardson, OT Joeckel, FS Vaccaro, FS Rambo, WR Dobson, RB Michael, TE McDonald, OT Foketi, WR Swope |

Yeah I saw the same play on ESPN Sporcenter Special. Except it was a highlight for the Jets.
The thing I immediately noticed about the play was how stupid McClain was. I mean really, not only do you completely screw up a chance at a tackle but you take out another defender with you? *facepalm*
The second thing I noticed was Chris Johnson, the next person around who could have made the tackle, being held.
But then when LT got his wood to flip the ball and screw the Raiders over as usual, I saw Tyvon fly in and stop him at the one. Such hustle. You know who really wants it out there. In fact, I'd say Tyvon is the best hustler on our defense. Maybe even team. He always chases down plays like that. _________________

No idea how you missed Porters awful attempt at a tackle. _________________

The media hates us....
But really, I'm having trouble finding why everyone is gushing over it. People do these things all the time and if this was LT from a couple years ago, no one catches him. Had it prevented a score, I might see some more weight put on it, but they scored two plays later.
Great hustle. That's awesome. How about making some plays though? That's what you're getting paid 6 mill for..... _________________

He's getting paid 6 million? Oh wait, no! He's never been paid that yet and they are close to a long term deal. So shut it w/ the money comments.
The point here is, the guy made a hustle play that a majority wouldn't even go after. Most players would jog it off and admit defeat. He hustled and made a play to stop a score. So there is the play you want him to make. Not really his fault the scored later. He did his job that play to prevent a score.
Nobody is 'gushing' over the play in reality. You're blind hatred for Branch is just allowing you to inflate what's actually happening so you have something to [inappropriate/removed] and moan about. _________________

I agree that pretty much getting tackled by a defender teammate is an awful attempt at tackling the ballcarrier. _________________

But seriously, plays like this happen often. It's a "great hustle" play. Hell I know our defensive highlights are few and far between but let's be super cereal here. LOL _________________

+1 He got taken down at the 1. That alone makes it not a great play. But as far as hustle, effort, and leadership goes, this is a good example of what Branch is all about. 100% on every play. |
