As I'm sure most of you know, Romo's contract is good through 2016 for cap purposes only and expires if he's still on the Roster at the beginning of the 2013 season. Essentially, this is the last season under his current deal.
With Drew Brees just signing for 5yrs, $100m and $60m guaranteed with his salary for future years becoming guaranteed if he's on the roster 3 days after the Super Bowl, I'm curious what this sets the market for Romo at.
Recent Contracts for Franchise QB's:
(12) Peyton Manning (36) Denver - 5yr $96m $60m guaranteed ($19m)
(12) Drew Brees (33) New Orleans - 5yr $100m $60m guaranteed ($20m)
(10) Tom Brady (33) New England - 5yr $78.5m $48.5 guaranteed (15m)
(09) Eli Manning (28) New York - 7yr $106m $35m guaranteed (15m)
(09) Philip Rivers (27) San Diego - 7yr $98m $38m guaranteed (14m)
Rodgers, Roethlisberger are outdated and not sure who else might be good to go with.
So 4 years prior to the new contract, Eli and Philip got $15m and $14m respectively. With contract escalations the way they are, they're a bit outdated. Since then rookie wage scale was implemented increasing the amount for veterans and the cap amount increased.
So what do you think the Cowboys bring Romo in at? What would you offer for a Top 5 statistical QB that's 32yrs old? _________________

5 years, $80 million ($42 guaranteed)
I think that's a fair deal for Romo and the Cowboys. _________________

I'd rather wait to see how this season plays out before offering him an extension. _________________

Well I wouldn't have expected you to agree with me with waiting on Romo. _________________

Hometown discount is gonna have to happen if there isn't major success this year. I like Tony; I just drafted him for pete's sake. But the organizational thinking is clear. Kyle Orton is under contract for three years. While you might think it's to be a backup, Ortons reasoning plays right into this whole contract situation:
Year 1: Backup Tony. Learn offense.
Year 2: Tony wants too much money for not enough success. Team lets him walk and drafts a QB. Start, and teach younger QB.
Year 3: Start, unless younger QB learns very quick.
Orton is a backup plan for Romo. He's younger, has experience leading teams with draft picks at QB behind him, and does well under that pressure. Orton is a message to Romo: put up some legit playoff success if you want a big contract.
This all becomes moot if Romo has major success this year. Orton is banking on him falling on his face. The team figures its set regardless. Romo's contract is in his own hands. _________________

Yeah, I wouldn't jump into re-upping Romo right now. He has 2 years under contract. I would at least wait to see how well he does this year.
I just really wish the FO would have given Romo a legit OL this year. _________________ Quote from May 7, 2013...

There is one difference between all those QB's, minus Rivers. They all have rings. Several have multiple rings. So IMO Romo falls into the next catagory of paychecks. Probably something close to what he got last time, maybe a few mil more. _________________
