I would definitely add SLB to the discussion as far as a camp battle... To some peoples surprise, I think Hayes beats Roach outright for the starting job. There shouldn't be much of a transition period for Hayes as he's coming from Tampa Bay... Also, Roach IMO is the weakest starter on this Defense and has consistently underperformed the past few seasons. I mean, Hayes was considered to have a poor season last year, yet he had 2x the amount of tackles, more FF's, and Int's than Nick Roach. _________________

You have to take into account that Hayes was playing on the weakside in Tampa which is a position that yields more production in general…Roach was playing the SLB spot and doing the dirty work to allow Urlacher & Briggs to do their thing…I have a hard time believing that Hayes could do the dirty work that the SLB position in our scheme calls for…if anyone were to challenge Roach it could be J.T Thomas. |

| Quote: | Bears MLB Brian Urlacher (knee) will not be limited in training camp.
Urlacher was held out of spring practices as a precaution, but he's been back to full health for awhile. "I'm full go for everything, so I won't be missing anything," Urlacher said. "One hundred and ten percent, I'm good to go." |

I don't see Roach losing his spot to anyone...he is a solid guy and neither Thomas or Hayes are going to take it from him. I do, however, believe that he is somewhat of a weakspot for us on D and we could use an upgrade there, but I don't see anyone on the roster right now that is an upgrade.
As for NT...the battle really doesn't matter much because all the DTs are going to rotate, we see it every year. The guy that starts making the most plays when the season starts will start getting more and more of the game snaps. _________________

True…maybe the actual battle amongst the DTs is who is going to be the #4 DT on the roster and can he make an impact to make up for the loss of Okoye. |

Doubt he has a shot of making the team now. |

I really liked what I saw in JT Thomas after looking into him after we drafted him last year. Hayes' presence will probably limit his reps but I think the kid has the talent to be a starting SLB in the league. Roach is just a guy to me - I could see him losing out to Thomas or Hayes personally. _________________

But I just wasn't impressed enough with Thomas to see him overtake Roach, and Hayes is moving from WLB, which is a world of difference from being a good SLB in the cover 2 run scheme. _________________

Same I see Hayes and Roach battling it out. Thomas a bit to raw maybe a fight next year for him I really hope Hayes makes a name in training camp. I really dont see roach as a positive asset unless injury occurs. _________________

I really hope Shea pans out. Take some pressure of of Peps. Paea I really have a feeling this will be a breakout year he showed some real force last year towards the end. I have no worries for AJ i really think he will be a solid piece to this franchise and a sure go to. Hayden stays healthy and Harding competes our secondary will be trustworthy not great but Tillman cant carry the load and really dont trust Wright at all!!Our O line just a ? I really cant say anything till Tice rolls out his offense (I am nervous tho) _________________

I’m feeling more and more confident about McClellin…I wasn’t down on the pick like most were at the time…I wasn’t sure he was a top 20 pick but I really liked him as a player and hearing about him more from Marinelli is giving me far more belief that he can have an immediate impact on this team…Marinelli has spoken about the process they are going to take him through…he has spoken about his movement, speed, COD & balance being top rate and has said that it is easier to take someone with those skills and add strength and bulk rather than starting out with a big bodied strong guy and trying to make him more explosive & flexible…much like they did with Melton…I think he will be starting by the midway point of the season…
I only saw this video of McClellin against Virginia Tech yesterday but it shows the type of player he could be for us in terms of being a versatile pass rusher…his work on stunts and twists will allow Marinelli to get very creative with just a 4 man rush…

A bit more muscle/weight I would feel better. I just think some of the tackles will eat him for lunch . _________________

260lbs isn’t that small…remember we have had guys like O-Gun & Alex Brown playing at 255lbs…Lovie’s scheme in the past had Leonard Little playing at 235lbs in STL…even Simeon Rice in Tampa under Lovie & Marinelli played most of his career in the 250lbs range…even some of the top current pass rushing DEs like Jason Babin, Trent Cole, Cliff Avril, Chris Clemons, John Abraham, Elvin Dumervil & Robert Mathis don’t have much bulk to them and all play around or under 260lbs…the league is pass first right now and getting to the QB has to be these guys #1 goal. |
