I think with the rise of Riley Reiff and signing Jon Scott, we could move Gosder to a tackle needy team. He's in the last year of his rookie deal, so no big loss for us.
I also think another team could make a run at Sammie Lee Hill. He's also a free agent next year and if he continues to improve will be hard to re-sign.
We're obviously in need of a starting-caliber corner, we have a couple of desirable commodities that could be moved.

Thoughts? Anybody else that could be on the block?

The Lions are finally pretty strong with their depth at those positions (DT, OT). Why should they be so quick to trade that depth away?

I'd rather play the season out with those guys and let them walk at the end of the season. The Lions often have problems with injuries along the offensive line, and their DT rotation is a big reason why the defensive line is so successful.

If they trade anyone I'd trade Avril for a decent haul if they know for sure they can't sign him long term.

I agree with pretty much everything in this post. The only reason I would trade Sammie or Gosder would be if we could get a legit starting corner or maybe a great safety. I don't want to trade some of our best depth as soon as we have it.

I could see us trading some like Andre Fluellen on the DL (assuming anyone wanted him) but with a looming suspension for Fairley I doubt they'd ship out Hill.

Alphonso Smith was on the trade block but with our depth at the CB position he's probably safe, plus he reportedly looked good in OTA's.

While these guys may be FAs next year (Gosder, Sammie) I'd rather have that depth this year. If they are good this year and leave, there's the chance they net us comp picks anyway which may only be slightly lower than what we'd receive via trade.

... I can't think of a reason why we'd look for reasons to trade Gosder right now. Scott is not better than Gosder, and Backus only has (what seems to be) one or two years left with the team. Gosder is a young, developing OLinemen who has shown considerable improvement throughout his career, and could potentially develop into a quality starting RT.

Why get rid of that player?

Because he may demand more than he is worth next season when he's a F/A. Basically the same reason many posters here wanted to trade Avril for.

If Gosder was demanding a top 10 contract for his position, I'd agree with your comparison completely. He wont, though, so I don't.

Yeah, he seems like a fan favorite around here. I'm really excited to see how he does this year.

Nope. I love me some Sammie.

He has been a great addition to the Lions and his play has improved each year. His development may lead to more looks with Suh or Fairley at DE.

I'd love to see a 4 DT set out there.

To answer you question dmudd, you may get that impression because most people on here feel he will have a very good season and then become too expensive to keep.

After that stunt the Lions pulled over the off-season; using an original round tender on Sammy; I can definitely see this situation mimicking our current contractual troubles with Avril.

Sammy has been developing at an exponential rate, so I could easily see him taking off for more money than the Lions will wanna spend. The Lions are at the point where they are gonna have to have the foresight to lock some of their young studs up before their values explode into unaffordable status.

Looks like Avril and Sammy are gonna have to be hard lessons to learn from.
