Rookie cornerback Bill Bentley will start his first career NFL game in the pre-season opener against the Browns.

Quote:
Bentley will start at right cornerback for the Detroit Lions, while John Wendling will start at safety in place of Louis Delmas, during Friday's preseason game against the Cleveland Browns. It is unknown how many snaps each player will receive, but this could be a sign of things to come for Bentley.

Quote:
Over the past week, Bentley has taken reps with Detroit's first-team. Bentley originally played in nickel packages, but recently emerged into a starter, a position he will fight to keep on Friday.
"I try not to let too much get to my head," Bentley said. "I try to stay humble and stay blessed about everything. It's a great opportunity. Thank God for the position, and go out and try to make the best of it."

Quote:
"I'm looking to play the whole game," Bentley said. "I'm fresh out there, so they might keep me out there the whole time. I'm not a starter yet. I'm just feeling out the position. I'm going to solidify the position on Friday."

Quote:
"Bentley is progressing well," Lions defensive backs coach Tim Walton said. "He's a competitor. He competes everyday, so that overcomes some of the things he's learning - a little technique loss - by being a competitor.
"He's a student of the game. He works hard at learning and understanding the defense, his responsibility, and the game situation. When you have a guy that puts forth that effort to do that, it shows up as being productive on the field. He's a disciplined guy, a hard worker, a great guy."

He's been impressive thus far in camp. Keeping in mind the learning curve and early struggles that rookies often face, what are you're expectations of him?

And this is why it is an "unofficial" depth chart. Can't wait to see how he plays.

I couldn't be happier. I hope he proves he belongs there and is a starter for us for a long time. Although I am not sure exactly what he will prove against Brandon Weeden and Mohamed Massaquoi

Anything less than a pick 6 on his 1st play is a fail... Wink

I'm excited to see him play though after all this praise during TC.

Can't wait to see him play! Hopefully he plays as good against Weeden tomarrow as he did the last time he played Weeden.

I hope he does well but not going to get overly excited with this game. I think Weeden is very overrated and product of OSU system

In addition I doubt Det dials up much blitzing which will make DBS look worse

I doubt we see Detroit dial up the blitz all season to any great frequency, this defense isn't built to apply pressure with the blitz.

Especially in preseason. It's usually pretty vanilla until the games start mattering.

Which is another reason the DBs look worse.

Like I said this game does nothing for me evaluating him.

Hope he does well but really cant judge off this game

Hell yeah, Really liked the Bentley pick when it was made. Thought he had a shot to get some playing time but wasn't sure he'd elevate this fast honestly. I expected Jacob Lacey to start the season or preseason with someone else beating him out through the process.

I watched Bentley vs Oklahoma St. and he looked decent but thats the only game I caught of him all last year. Coaches must like his athletic ability. Might also mean he's grasping the defense better than anyone else right now.

Very cool.

He would be a huge asset to the team if he can step in and play well. I guess we'll see soon enough whether he's starting due to lack of strong competition or because he's totally legit.

Absolutely.

If he does pan out, and plays well, it's pretty much calms all of those "didn't address the CB position" concerns. Would some call it "luck"? Possibly. When you keep doing it, though, it starts to look like quality preparation.
