Quote:
Miami Dolphins quarterback David Garrard will undergo arthroscopic knee surgery, he said Friday in a text message.

Garrard later told FOX Sports insider and NFL Network contributor Jay Glazer that he will have the operation Saturday and that doctors believe he'll be out two to four weeks.

Prior to this, Garrard was actually leading incumbent Matt Moore and 1st-round rookie Ryan Tannehill in the three-way battle for the starting QB position. Reportedly, this is due to "wear and tear". Either way, it sucks for the 34 year old veteran, since this pretty much ends his hopes to start on Week 1. Matt Moore will battle Ryan Tannehill to be the starter. Matt Moore is getting the nod to start in the Fins first pre-season game against the Bucs tonight.

It has also been suggested that the Dolphins will go into the season with only two Quarterbacks. That means that if he can't beat out Matt Moore before the season begins, there is a high probability of him being cut.

Once they put Tannehill in it would seem counterproductive to look back. I can't see him being the best choice to start the year under center unless they are prepared to admit this is just a developmental season from week one so I would have to assume Moore starts the regular season opener.

I feel bad with all the injuries he has been having. Hope he recovers soon.

Matt Moore should be starting, no reason to rush in Tannehill at this point.

Their playoff hopes take a pretty big hit with this news.

I thought Tannehill looked good early in Pre-Season. I wonder if this turns into a Joe Flacco situation when he wasn't slated to start early but ended up getting rushed into duty when the two QBs ahead of him (Troy Smith and Kyle Boller) got sick/injured.

man, not great for Garrard. missing crucial reps against what is most likely the "rising rookie" could hurt the savvy vet. I was rooting for Garrard, I've always been a fan of the guy and thought that he would be able to win the starting job going into the season. my thoughts was that Garrard would start the season, play pretty well considering, while the rookie would sit and watch considering Tannehil is pretty raw as an NFL commodity. Most likely after the year, Tannehil would be fully entrenched in as the starter.

The Dolphins should start Tannehill week 1.

Doubtful. I think most teams look at him as a really high quality backup who can give you some good starts if needed. This doesn't seem like the kind of procedure which would change that assessment all that much.

More bad news for the Dolphins. I figure Tannehill's the starter there by Week 8 or 9.
