Agreed. It gets better and better with subsequent viewings. _________________

If you could be one character from The Wire, who would you be and why? |
Probably Daniels. He's been my favorite character since that scene where he met Clay Davis in Burrell's office. I admire people who don't play politics and want to get real results. |
This was my fisrt choice as well. He made a positive difference his entire career, and even after his career as a police he still ends up with a career that makes positive difference. Plus, he didn't have to take a bunch of BS to do so, cept when the feds took over the investigation IIRC. |
But he was not immune to getting caught up in it all, especially earlier in his career in the Eastern. Part of the reason Daniels goes nuts on Herc and Carver when he thinks they stole the money is becasue of what he has done in the past. |
See, this is why I need to re-watch the series. _________________

Yup. I remember the 1st time I watched the 2nd season, I was like, "WTF!? Where's Avon and Stringer? Why are you showing these port losers!? DUDE!!!!!!"
Then towards the end when stuff hit the fan, I thought it was a great season. After watching the show the 2nd time, I decided it was my favorite. _________________ Equal Opportunity Hater

I refuse to read any post in this entire thread, because I am watching the series from the beginning and I don't want any spoilers. For some strange reason, I had never seen The Wire up until roughly last weekend. My girl's dad actually let me borrow the entire series on DVD, and I have been watching ever since. I absolutely love it so far, and I'm only about halfway or maybe a little bit longer through Season 1. I'll check back once I have completed the task _________________

Where do people stand on The Wire vs. Sopranos debate?
I'm finishing The Sopranos now, and it's pretty unbelievable.
It's definitely the only show along with Mad Men that I would put near The Wire. _________________

I feel like nothing can touch the Wire, but the Sopranos is pretty much perfect in its own right. What makes the debate even more interesting is how completely different they are in many respects, even though they're both crime dramas. The Wire has a much more macro perspective, commenting on American society and institutions and the entire system in general. The Sopranos is more micro, and focuses on individual psychologies and family dynamics. Tony does spend a lot of time commenting on society's change to being more touchy-feely ("whatever happened to Gary Cooper, the strong silent type?"), but the whole point of this commentary is that it's due to his perspective that's warped by his being isolated in this tiny community.
The Sopranos is also much more cinematic, with things like dream sequences, recognizable actors, lots of non-digetic music and flashbacks, while the Wire has an almost documentary feel to it.
I feel like the message and overall intention of the Wire is a little more sophisticated, complex and impressively executed than that of the Sopranos, and there is no superlative strong enough for me to adequately praise the way they perfectly interweave countless storylines that all affect eachother from all levels of society. Pound for pound the acting on the Sopranos might be better, not that the Wire doesn't have great performances, but I feel like it was almost just absolutely perfect casting for many of the roles, while the actors on the Sopranos probably have more range. There has to be a reason nobody outside of Idris Elba and maybeee Amy Ryan has really become anything close to a mainstream star. _________________

Part of that is because many of the characters, maybe not major ones, but a fair few of them were picked up in Baltimore. Snoop Pearson for example essentially plays herself on The Wire.
But I have seen some of the others around every now and then, but never anything big, Sonja Sohn has bene in a few things I have seen, Tristan Wilds picked up a pretty major role on 90210, Dominic West is a pretty big actor in the UK, Wood Harris has been in a few things and Michael K Williams was a fully credited role in Boardwalk Empire. But I have been surprised that a guy like Andre Royo has not had much work outside of The Wire. _________________ Patrick Peterson - 92 targets, 40 catches allowed, 602 yards, 6 TD's, 7 INT's

Yeah, MKW is a pretty prominent character in Boardwalk Empire.
The actor who played Wallace (Michael B Jordan) was a main character in Friday Night Lights and Chronicle. He has been pretty successful and should keep getting bigger. _________________

Where's Wallace Man, Huh, String, Where the [] is Wallace.
He is over there, on the Girdiron, making something of himself. _________________ Patrick Peterson - 92 targets, 40 catches allowed, 602 yards, 6 TD's, 7 INT's

Michael B Jordan also had a pretty significant recurring role in the NBC show Parenthood over 2 of the 3 seasons, but he's off the show right now. _________________

I was about to post this. Quite a few "cameo" characters are from The Charm City. Including, IIRC, the Balimore rapper "Skarr Akbar".
I know I've seen J.D. Williams (Bodie) in other things, but can't think of what they are. I know he was in "Oz", but not sure what else.
EDIT: Michael K Williams (Omar) has a recurring role on "Community". _________________
