| Quote: | Former Baltimore Ravens owner Art Modell has died. He was 87.
The team said Modell died of natural causes early Thursday at Johns Hopkins Hospital, where he had been admitted Wednesday.
Modell was among the most important figures in the NFL as owner of the Cleveland Browns, which became the Ravens after he took the team to Baltimore in 1996 in a move that tarnished his reputation as one of the league's most innovative and influential owners. |
One of the pioneers of the NFL, and one of the main drivers of growing the National Football League's exposure on national television, the former Cleveland Browns owner was heavily villified in 1996, when he moved the Browns from Cleveland, OH to Baltimore, MD. Modell sold his ownership stake in the Ravens in 2004 to current Ravens majority shareholder, Steve Bisciotti. _________________

In the future add a quick sentence or two from the article to inform members more about the news. Don't just post a link.
You're new here so I'll let it pass this time. _________________

Art Modell bought the legendary Cleveland Browns in 1962. He was an ad man like Pete Rozelle.
His early moves were interesting. Legendary HC Paul Brown had become complacent. Modell fired him in '63 and hired his asst. Blanton Collier. He also fired Jim Brown who was on a movie set in Europe filming The Dirty Dozen, and wouldn't return home to practice.
Collier and Modell obtained LA Rams QB Frank Ryan, a math PhD. The Browns played in four NFL championships winning one.
Modell was Rozelle's man on TV contracts and the AFL-NFL merger and realignment.
Modell helped move the NFL into a modern business model. High stakes SB's and revenue streams followed. _________________ "I have to keep playing so people over 40 will have somebody to root for on Sunday afternoons." George Blanda who played until he was 46 |

I wonder how long it will now take the city of Cleveland to truly forgive him, if ever.

Probably won't happen. People here are still salty about Irsay.
But as I said this morning in my own post, Rest in Peace Mr. Modell. May you find comfort in the presence of the Lord. And thank you for bringing football back to Baltimore. _________________

*awkward silence*
I don't think I'm going to say anything. _________________

| Why are reporters asking if the Browns will have a moment of silence for this man? What type of nonsense is that? |
