I believe everyone recognized that Alex's confidence had been shot before Harbaugh arrived. Harbaugh brought him around slowly and his confidence returned. (sort of). It seems to me that Alex has the confidence to make the safe plays but lacks the desire to force a pass into a smaller window. Now in a ball control offense like the Niners run this is Ok! That is untill the get behind by two scores with the clock winding down like the did against Min. It seems to me that Alex is so used to playing it safe ( taking what the defense gives him ) that when it is neccessary to force the envelop he can not do it. He seems to be too afraid to throw an interception. The passes he missed were mostly overthrows or too far from the side that the defender was on for even the receiver to get the ball. Perhaps this last game was just one bad game. But that game presented the type of situation that I was concerned about. Two scores behind- when playing it safe is not an option. My gut feeling was that Alex couldn't make the tight window risk throws neccessary for that type of situation. And in that game my suspicions seemed to hold form. |

I had the same worries while watching this game. This might be wishful thinking but part of me felt that Harbaugh has the plays to get these games back but that he didn't want to bust them out in Week 3 against Minnesota. Sure, teams know now that Alex Smith can run from an empty pocket and that if we bring Kaeper out for a snap that it doesn't mean there's any chance he'll even throw it, but I'm fairly certain Jim still has an exciting bunch of tricks up his sleeve.
I felt like we were always going to lose to the Vikes once we went 2-0 and against two good teams but I feel like we could have taken that game back, Jim just didn't want to compromise any tricks up his sleeve or Alex's play either.
As I said, that could just be wishful thinking and Minni beat us at our own game haha |

The thing is, we didn't even play our own game. We came out throwing. In the first quarter, I remember the announcer say we had thrown 8 times and ran only twice. That's not our game. We let our OL bully others with nasty run-blocking, then we pass to keep them off-balance. The Vikes did that (minus the run-blocking bullying). I don't know why Harbaugh felt the need to come out throwing against the Vikes. I don't mind throwing early, but I do mind ignoring our run game, when it's truly what drives our offense. _________________
