That's pretty rare... They don't fine simply for "cross-checking" per say... more for extremely malicious intent. Cross-checking a guy in the face on purpose, that kind of thing. Cross-checking is ridiculously common, and it's usually not even noticed. (a lot of young players are taught how to cross-check without being called... simply keeping your hands apart about 6 inches on the stick gives a lot of the same leverage that an "illegal" cross-check would, and it will NEVER get called) When it is called, it's a minor. Players don't receive fines for that. It's when they do something gratuitous that involved cross-checking that actually gets fined. _________________

That's exactly the point: the NFL doesn't just fine someone for leading with their helmet... they fine someone for leading with their helmet into the other player's helmet. Not every hit gets fined: just the ones against players who can't defend themselves, that often lead to career-threatening injuries. _________________
