I just saw an advertisement on NFL Network for a tv show highlighting the Fearsome Foursome, the legendary defensive line of the Los Angeles Rams. Someone called them "the greatest defensive line of all time" on the commercial.

I would have to disagree. Back in the same era, there was the Purple People Eaters defense of the Vikings. During many of these years, the two teams would meet in the playoffs, with the Vikings coming out on top.

Both of them were incredible, but which one of these units do you think was the best?

Fearsome Foursome: Rosey Grier, Lamar Lundy, Merlin Olsen, Deacon Jones

Purple People Eaters: Carl Eller, Alan Page, Gary Larsen, Jim Marshall

Interesting... I'd go with the FF, but this should make for a good thread.

FF-Olsen and Jones? I wouldn't want to be a QB facing those 2.

I think it's Minny.

Eller is very underrated and Page is my #1 DT in NFL history.

It is really close though. I would have loved to see Youngblood come a little earlier to see a line with him Jones and Olsen. That would have been absurd.

Youngblood did start three games in 1971, Jones' last year in LA. So, that trio probably played together each of those times.

I think the 87-91 Eagles' defensive line deserves a mention in this discussion also. Reggie White, Clyde Simmons, Jerome Brown and then a revolving door at LDT w/ Golic/Pitts/Clarke. Although I guess they weren't quite as dominant as the PPEs or FF. I think the PPEs are the greatest defensive line of all time, just had the better players.

No they dont. The thread is solely comparing the PPEs vs the FF.

Favorite Team*: Minnesota Vikings

Homerism: Initiated

Pick: Purple People Eaters

I wasn't around for either, so what do I know? I just go off by what highlights were shown of those guys, plus what Vike Grandpa says. Laughing

It's hard to say one way or another since all I've ever seen were grainy highlight films of those two defenses.
