Rookie safety Harrison Smith was ejected for shoving aside back judge Steve Freeman in the second quarter; Freeman was forcefully walking Smith away from a scrum. Smith apologized profusely in the postgame locker room and said he hoped to avoid a suspension. Referee Jeff Triplette told a pool reporter that the move qualified as an "automatic ejection" and added: "He was just trying to separate from the huddle and he can’t be shoving him aside."
Smith: "The officials already have a hard job. I should never have been there. I just want to play next week. It was one of those things where I kind of got caught up in it. Just stupid for me putting myself in that situation and putting the ref in that situation. Putting the ref in that situation, I apologize for that."

Smith was also fined $21,000 in the preseason for an overly aggressive hit. with Goodell in attendance at the Dome today, will Smith's mea culpa afterward keep him from a suspension...? _________________

it didn't look vicious, and I don't think Smith even realized it was a ref at first. I really hope he isn't suspended, but I'm sure he will get fined. _________________

| Hopefully he gets nothing more than a meeting with the commish and a fine. I dont think the Vikes can afford Smith receiving a suspension, he has probably been the best DB on the Vikes this year. |

With the Goodell being there, I wonder if they talked at all afterwards. _________________ XBL/PSN: Chainedsniper |

doubtful. Goodell would want it to be a business only meeting if/when he does meet with Smith. _________________

By all accounts, Harrison is a stand-up man. I think he just fell victim to the intensity of the moment. In situations like that, you don't always process how you are behaving in real-time; your judgment, clouded by emotion, is slowed a split-second. I don't see any grounds to suspend him. A fine is perfectly appropriate. He has a good head on his shoulders; he'll learn just fine from this. _________________

Incident aside I think really think the Vikings found themselves a very good player in Smith. I think he'll be fined but I don't think he'll get a suspension. _________________

i agree, but we'll see if Goodell needs to use this incident to make some form of larger statement. Smith showing immediate contrition and taking responsibility for his admitted mistake should buy him quite a bit.
hopefully Goodell sees it as non-malicious and a mistake of... yute.
but get out your checkbook, Harry. this one's really going to cost you. _________________

Lets always not be completey rosy about things.
This is Harrisons 2nd offense in like 6 games?
Commish may take that into account... _________________

He also may take into account that Harrison was apologetic about it and didn't make any excuses for his actions. _________________

What can you say, stupid move by Harrison. I personally thought ejection was a bit harsh, but a rule is a rule. Seems like a one-off incident if you ask me.
Side-note: love his agression and fiery demeanor on the field. _________________

I haven't felt that way about a Safety of ours since Robert Griffith. So far I'm a huge Harrison Smith fan. _________________

A fine is obvious, but a suspension would be a joke. Smith was ejected because the officials were calling it by the letter of the law. If the Commissioner wasn't in attendance, I highly doubt Smith would have been tossed. _________________
