Extreme athlete Felix Baumgartner hopes to make a second attempt to skydive from the edge of space on Sunday morning at 6 am MDT. After two postponed attempts, Baumgartner will try again to break the world’s free-fall record at 23 miles above Roswell, N.M. and become the first skydiver to surpass the speed of sound.
Baumgartner is hoping to become the first skydiver to break the sound barrier by jumping from a capsule floated 23 miles into the stratosphere by 55-story helium balloon.
The jump was postponed due to wind Monday, then aborted at the last minute because of wind gusts Tuesday. The balloon is so delicate that it can take off only if winds on the ground are 2 mph or less.

Ironman did this already.
But seriously, this would be cool to see. Hopefully it goes off flawless. _________________

23 miles-whatever. | If he really wants to impress me he'll go for the Astronauts Badge. Of course he'd have to go up to 50 miles for that _________________

what a rush. That would be crazy fun (at least until you hit the ground). I have a strong desire to go skydiving someday soon. _________________

| Having skydived before, I can't even imagine what a rush this would be. The feeling you get jumping at a normal altitude is incredibly intense, but this is just insane. Dude's got some serious brass. |

How does he land? Are parachutes that strong to not rip by trying to slow him down going almost 700mph? Is it a special type of material? I feel like you'd have to gradually slow down, not just pull a rip cord at that speed. Anyone know? _________________

That's a lot heavier, and they had parachutes that worked. Shouldn't be a problem for one guy. _________________

But those parachutes simply slow the fall, not necessarily allow him to guide himself. As well, those can slow the fall with a great rate of speed, but with a human that change in speed could cause serious complications, I would imagine.
My guess would be some sort of combination -- something like that to slow him down initially, then maybe let it go and eject a normal parachute that allows him to control it. _________________

He will reach speeds around 700mph in the upper atmosphere where the "air" is not very dense. He will slow down as he falls through more dense atmosphere. By the time he pulls his parachute he'll be going the same speed as any other skydiver. |

What would happen if he hits a bird during his 23 mile free fall at the speed of sound?
This sounds like a terrible idea. _________________
