According to this article, Eric Mangini offered John Abraham to Atlanta for Matt Schaub, but they declined:
http://espn.go.com/new-york/nfl/story/_/id/8468537/new-york-jets-pursued-matt-schaub-2006
Also, after they made the three-way trade with Atlanta and Denver that got them the 29th pick, they tried to trade that pick (that they would end up using on Nick Mangold) to San Diego for Michael Turner. |

Shaub would make that franchise a lot better. Who knows, maybe Mangini would still have the job?
Btw, I think a more accurate title would be "Jets tried to trade for Shaub in 2006". _________________

Just like Drew Brees was almost a Dolphin...
Either way, coulda, woulda, shoulda... hindsight is 20/20. No one knows what would've happened had Schaub been traded to the Jets instead of the Texans (or anyone else that wouldve been affected... Pennington, Mangini, Favre, Sanchez, Carr, Kubiak, etc.). Its almost impossible to predict all of the ramifications. _________________ With much cheese,

In hindsight, the Jets are foolish for not giving up more to get this deal done.
However, with that 29th pick that the Falcons wanted, the Jets took Nick Mangold. In addition, the Jets wasted a 2nd round pick on Kellen Clemends. Lets pretend the Jets offered the 29th pick and a 2nd rd pick.
What would you rather have? Matt Schaub or Nick Mangold and Kellen Clemens.
Or guess they could have traded John Abraham and a 2nd round pick same trade basically, since pick 29 came from trading Abraham, did it not? |

Shaub's lucky he ended up in Houston.
If the Jets had landed Schaub, they might have a trophy or two. Their defense was elite for a few years back then. _________________

Had this happened, I'm certain that the Texans would of selected QB Brady Quinn in 2007. As someone who believes that Quinn was never given a proper chance, I think he would of done...well, not GREAT, but he would of been given a 2-3 year window to prove his worth. _________________

Ehh...but they didnt really have great weapons around him on offense. Coles and Cothery were decent, but nothing special. They had no running game either. And the Jets defense wasnt that great until 2009. I think media scrutiny in New York coupled with theose other things wouldve been his downfall.
I dont think he would have nearly the success in New York as he has had in Houston. I know he didnt have a ton to work with in Houston the first few years, but at least they were patient enough to stick it out with him. Dont think it wouldve happened in New York. _________________

IIRC, Minny also offered up a late 1st for Schaub but the Falcons turned it down
Can anyone confirm this. _________________

In 2006. I dont recall this. The Vikings had the 17th overall pick.
In 2007, the Vikes had the 7th overall pick.
Neither pick was offered, if i recall correctly.
I know Childress had an interest in Schaub and there were always rumors, but i thought it was for the 2nd round picks (MN had two in 2006). |

Yea, it might have been a 2nd. Wasn't exactly sure but I do remember Minnesota being interested in acquiring Schaub. _________________

Yep, they did have an interest in Schaub. MN received an additional 2nd round pick in the Culpepper trade in 2006 (51 overall) and they had the 48th overall pick.
In hindsight, trading both 2nd round picks (48 and 51), probably would have been a decent deal for Atlanta and surely would have helped MN a ton. MN took Cedric Griffin and Ryan Cook with those picks, and then traded both 3rd round picks to move back into round 2 for Tarvaris Jackson.
Everything looks better in hindsight, of course, but I think Schaub could have had success in Minnesota considering the next year they did draft Adrian Peterson and Sidney Rice and in 2009 added Percy Harvin. |

^^^ But odds are if Minny traded for Schaub they would probably not have drafted the next Joe Montana. _________________ Equal Opportunity Hater

...or Tavaris Jackson. You know. Because, they drafted him. In the 2nd round, no less. _________________

It worked out ok, since that led the Vikes to seek Favre, which created a 1 year window of contending, followed by a collapse which resulted in draft position to select the new Joe Montana who is behind center today. It's all smooth sailing from here on out. _________________ Equal Opportunity Hater
