Why don't teams just completely avoid this kind of mid-level talent in free agency? They pretty much never live up to expectations.

Most Viking fans had the sense that Edwards was never really that good of a player. Edwards was a borderline elite run defender in his time in MN but he was a very mediocre and inconsistent pass rusher. Edwards ability to stuff the run largely enabled him to start over Brian Robison, but most sensed that Robison would be a better pass rusher for the team.

In 2011, the Vikes opted to resign Brian Robison to a 4 year contract, basically enabling Edwards to test the market.

In the end, the Vikes got a 4th rd pick comp pick out of the deal and were able to get Robison on the field more. Robison replaced Edwards, and Everson Griffen replaced Robison in his old role. Upgrades across the board really.

I am not sure why Edwards busted in Atlanta. Its not like John Abraham is a bad pass rusher, I cant imagine Edwards getting much attention.

There was always something off about this guy, not sure what it was I just didnt get a good feeling about paying him a big money contract. Like the commitment just wouldnt be there.

Not being that great to begin with coupled with a lack of commitment would be my guess.

I saw Ray Edwards on Bourbon St right before he signed his deal with the Falcons, just a massive ripped mofo. Definitely didn't bust due to lack of gym time, Laughing

Should see some Orlovsky vs Manziel this week in the battle of "who's less aware of their surroundings"

Orlovsky has too much experience here. Manziel doesn't stand a chance.

Edwards walks away from the Falcons with $12 million in his pocket.

The game against Dallas in the 2009 playoffs is where Edwards got his paycheck.

The Falcons should have done there homework. Consistently poor commitment to football, contract-year wonder... you could see this coming from a mile away.

I remember when we gave the mega contract to Charles Johnson, people were saying Atlanta was smarter to give Edwards what they did rather than "overpay" for Johnson. Fast forward, Johnson with 8.5 sacks, 5 FFs in 9 games and in '11, was 6th in TFLs.

Holy [inappropriate/removed] the Panthers are so much better at personnel decisions than the Falcons.

I'm shocked!

I thought he was the better choice between Robison/Edwards. Guess I missed on that one.

Think twice if you want to give Michael Johnson alot of money this offseason.

Anybody have any details?

Any chance he asked for his release because he felt like he could be a starter elsewhere?

I still think he's worth a look as a LDE. Might just need the right coach and motivation. I can't think of anyone better than Mike Smith but everybody's different.
