Letting them hang around as lame ducks seems awfully cruel.

Someone is going to get a great playcaller.

Bout time A.J. stopped living off the Eli trade. Awful GM.

We have to keep Norv, no one knows how to call plays but him. Laughing

I hope the defensive staff aside from Meeks is retained, they've been fantastic.

Acee's report

http://www.utsandiego.com/news/2012/dec/06/smith-will-join-turner-out-door-end-chargers-seaso/

SDUT-Kevin Acee wrote:
It is not known who will take over for Turner, but current Director of Player Personnel Jimmy Raye is the apparent replacement for Smith. Raye, who has been with the Chargers for 17 seasons, will ascend to a job much like Smith’s but with his new right-hand man being the owner’s son, John Spanos.

The younger Spanos, currently the team’s Director of College Scouting, has long been in line to take over the Chargers’ football operations, but the plan was for that to not happen until the expiration of Smith’s contract after the 2014 season.

Pretty much what everybody has been expecting.

Heard he will be free soon, and he knows the ropes.

Have you watched the Chargers in the last few years?

AJ brought a huge amount of talent here aside from that trade, and his recent picks have been contributing a ton. Over the past few years he's brought Butler, Liuget, Reyes, Ingram, Thomas. But he was likely to leave soon anyway, the fans are POed, the Oline hasn't been addressed as it needed to be (although not entirely his fault aside from keeping Clary and no backup plan at LT) and so it made sense.

A.J Smith has been a bad GM

His ego has ruined the team(fire Marty after a 14-2 season) and he lost several good players because of his ego(sproles,Jackson, etc)

Yeah, Norv hasn't been a great playcaller since 2009.

No, that's not true. Marty lost two coordinators and wanted to hire his godawful brother Kurt. He also didn't get along with management overall, it wasn't just Smith.

He lost neither of those players because of ego. Sproles declined to return. Jackson had too many issues with us to warrant the type of contract he was going to get.

Not sure why but I'm happy for this news. Congrats to Charger fans...

Orlovsky has too much experience here. Manziel doesn't stand a chance.
