2013 Offseason
*only changes from a previous mock will include explanations.
2013 Free Agents
Quarterbacks
Joe Flacco resigns with Baltimore Ravens
Matt Moore signs with New York Jets
Jason Campbell signs with Pittsburgh Steelers
Alex Smith traded from Sand Francisco 49ers to Kansas City Chiefs
Michael Vick released by Philadelphia Eagles
Michael Vick signs with Minnesota Vikings
-This is tough one to predict. It doesn’t appear that Vick will be back as an Eagle next year and it’s hard to imagine Leslie Frazier will continue to allow Christian Ponder to put his job in jeopardy. Vick wouldn’t be asked to do a whole lot for an offense that likes to feed the league’s best runningback and he’d have talented receivers to throw to in Percy Harvin and Kyle Rudolph.
Runningbacks
Reggie Bush resigns with Miami Dolphins
-Bush is the Dolphin’s best runningback despite the team investing in young and talented rushers in the past two drafts. The team doesn’t need to bring him back but I believe they will for a fair and honest price. Bush has made himself a nice home in Miami and I think he will remain a Dolphin as long as they’ll have him.
Rashard Mendenhall unsigned
-With the recent falling out between Mendenhall and the Steelers, I don't believe he will be back in Pittsburgh next year. I also have a hard time finding a team that will want to bring him in unless he is willing to take lower salary that he anticipates. I think he'll go into week 1 of the preseason unsigned.
Stephen Jackson resigns with St. Louis Rams
Peyton Hillis signs with Dallas Cowboys
Felix Jones signs with Kansas City Chiefs
Shonn Greene resigns with New York Jets
Receivers
Greg Jennings resigns with Green Bay Packers (franchise tag)
Victor Cruz resigns with New York Giants
Mike Wallace signs with Indianapolis Colts
Dwayne Bowe signs with Miami Dolphins
Wes Welker signs with Kansas City Chiefs
Danny Amendola resigns with St. Louis Rams
Tight Ends
Fred Davis resigns with Washington Redskins
Jared Cook resigns with Tennessee Titans (franchise tag)
-Cook has had a tumultuous relationship with the Titan’s coaching this year. The team did end up firing the offensive coordinator and he has emerged as one of Locker’s favorite targets before his injury. I think the Titans give him another chance to breakout in 2013.
Jermichael Finley signs with Miami Dolphins
-The Packers gave Finley a fresh start this year. He hasn’t lived up to the expectations he has for himself or the team had for him. Miami would make sense considering the offense and the familiarity with former Packer coordinator, Joe Philbin.
Dustin Keller resigns with New York Jets
Tony Gonzalez retires
-Gonzalez has stated that this is his last year. It might be hard to believe if
Heath Miller resigns with Pittsburgh Steelers
Offensive Lineman
Jake Long signs with Miami Dolphins (franchise tag)
-Miami will want to bring back their injured tackle. I anticipate there will be disagreements between the two sides and the team uses the tag to retain him. The Dolphins are a young team that can’t afford to regress amidst a fan base hungry for playoff contention.
Jermaine Bushrod resigns with New Orleans Saints (franchise tag)
Ryan Clady resigns with Denver Broncos
Branden Albert resigns with Kansas City Chiefs
Sebastian Vollmer resigns with New England Patriots
Brandon Moore signs with Chicago Bears
Andy Levitre resigns with Buffalo Bills
-The Bills are going to want to continue to control the interior of the line of scrimmage and resigning Levitre will be key to that.
Andre Smith resigns with Cincinnati Bengals
Sam Baker signs with Arizona Cardinals
Defensive Lineman
Dwight Freeney signs with Oakland Raiders
-The Raiders have had a tough time signed veteran pass rushers in the past. Freeney can revitalize his career and be able to play the part of a pure pass rusher on a team that will likely bring in a lot of new faces on the defensive front.
Henry Melton resigns with Chicago Bears
Cliff Avril signs with Cleveland Browns
Terrence Knighton resigns with Jacksonville Jaguars
Randy Starks signs with Dallas Cowboys
Osi Umenyiora signs with Tampa Bay Buccaneers
Michael Johnson resigns with Cincinnati Bengals
Glenn Dorsey signs with New Orleans Saints
Alan Branch signs with Carolina Panthers
Jason Jones resigns with Seattle Seahawks
Isreal Idonije signs with Oakland Raiders
Linebackers
Brian Urlacher resigns with Chicago Bears
Shaun Phillips resigns with San Diego (franchise tag)
Anthony Spencer signs with Miami Dolphins
Manny Lawson signs with Indianapolis Colts
Connor Barwin resigns with Houston Texans (franchise tag)
Daryl Smith signs with Cleveland Browns
Rey Maualuga resigns with Cincinnati Bengals
Defensive Backs
CB
Brent Grimes signs with Philadelphia Eagles
Tracy Porter resigns with Denver Broncos
Sean Smith resigns with Miami Dolphins
Quentin Jammer signs with Houston Texans
Dominique Rodgers-Cromartie signs with Indianapolis Colts
Derek Cox resigns with Jacksonville Jaguars
Aqib Talib resigns with New England Patriots
S
Ed Reed resigns with Baltimore Ravens
William Moore resigns with Atlanta Falcons
Dashon Goldson resigns with San Francisco 49ers
LaRon Landry resigns with New York Jets
Jairus Byrd resigns with Buffalo Bills (franchise tag)
Louis Delmas resigns with Detroit Lions (franchise tag)
2013 NFL Draft
1st round
*Jake Matthews does not declare for 2013 NFL Draft
1) Kansas City Chiefs select Star Lutolelei, DL, Utah
2) Jacksonville Jaguars select Geno Smith, QB, West Virginia
3) Oakland Raiders select Damontre Moore, DL, Texas A&M
4) Philadelphia Eagles select Luke Joeckel, OL, Texas A&M
5) Carolina Panthers select Johnathan Hankins, DL, Ohio State
6) Tennessee Titans select Bjoern Werner, DL, Florida State
-While the Titans don't have a pressing need at defensive end, Werner has been flying up draft boards and has even been pegged as a top 5 talent. This early in the first round, teams tend to go after the best player available.
7) Arizona Cardinals select Tyler Wilson, QB, Arkansas
-This selection comes with the prospect of Ken Wisenhunt not coming back next year. Whoever takes his place wil want to immediately rectify the signal callers in Arizona and give the franchise some hope moving forward.
Detroit Lions select DeMarcus Milliner, DB, Alabama
-The Lion's secondary has a whole lot of holes in it. Some say the main issue is at the safety positon but with no viable safeties available to chose from in the top ten, I believe Milliner will be the selection.
9) San Diego Chargers select Taylor Lewan, OL, Michigan
-If the Chargers decide to retain Rivers (and I believe they will) they will want to protect him. When he has time, he is aong the best signal callers in the league.
10) Buffalo Bills select Jarvis Jones, LB, Georgia
-Jones is a player that many consider being among the best in the class. Jones would be an immediate impact player on a defense that could use a versatile playmaker.
11) Miami Dolphins select Sheldon Richardson, DL, Missouri
-I project Starks won't be back with the team in 2013. Richardson is a player that Dolphin's GM, Jeff Ireland, likes based on his size and athleticism.
12) Cleveland Browns select Manti Te’o, LB, Notre Dame
13) New Orleans Saints select Barkevious Mingo, DL, Louisianta State
14) Tampa Bay Buccaneers select Dion Jordan, DL, Oregon
-The Buccaneers would love to select a corner here, but this draft doesn't have a whole lot of talent at the position at the top end. Jordan is an athletic and versatile player who can help his team attack the passer.
15) New York Jets select Chance Warmack, OL, Alabama
-The Jets have had a lot of problems along the offensive line this year. Warmack is believed to be one of the best guard prospects in a decade.
16) St. Louis Rams select Eric Fisher, OL, Central Michigan
-Like many teams who have young and talented signal callers, they want to protect them. The Rams will need to continue to invest in the offensive line until they get it right.
17) Cincinnati Bengals select Sam Montgomery, DL/LB, Louisiana State
1 St. Louis Rams (f/WAS) select Jonathan Cooper, OL, North Carolina
-See #16.
19) Dallas Cowboys select Barrett Jones, OL, Alabama
-While the team has found some balance with the return of DeMarco Murray, There are still a lot of inconsistencies along the offensive line. The window is closing for this group of players in Dallas and they will need to solidify the trenches as much as possible before it finally shuts.
20) Minnesota Vikings select Keenan Allen, WR, California
21) Pittsburgh Steelers select Jonathan Jenkins, DL, Georgia
-While the defense has mostly met it's high standards this year, age will be a factor moving forward. Jenkins will help spell the ageless Casey Hampton and eventually take over in the future.
22) Chicago Bears select Lane Johnson, OL, Oklahoma
-It's no secret the Bears need offensive line help. Johnson might be a bit of a reach here but the need is so glaring it's hard to debate the pick.
23) Seattle Seahawks select Tavon Austin, WR, West Virginia
24) Indianapolis Colts select Dallas Thomas, OL, Tennessee
25) New York Giants select Alec Ogletree, LB, Georgia
-Ogletree is one of the most athletic linebackers in this years's draft class. The Giants could use his youth and versatility in their cover 2.
26) Green Bay Packers select Joseph Randle, RB, Oklahoma State
27) Baltimore Ravens select Jonathan Banks, DB, Mississippi State
-The Ravens haven't been able to stop the pass as well as they'd hope this year. It's been partly due to the injuries and partly due to the personell. This selection will put pressure on Jimmy Smith to improve and Webb to come back strong after his injury.
2 Denver Broncos select Kewaan Short, DL, Purdue
29) San Francisco 49ers select Chase Thomas, LB/DL, Stanford
30) New England Patriots select Alex Okafor, DL/LB, Texas
31) Atlanta Falcons select Tyler Eifert, TE, Notre Dame
32) Houston Texans select Terrance Williams, WR, Baylor |

Love the Dion Jordan selection, but CB has to be signed in offseason first. Instead of the Osi, who wouldnt come to Tampa if Sherridan is still the DC(can guarentee that), go with DRC or Jenkins for us. _________________

With the 2 offseason moves you predict for us, you basically rebuild our defensive line interior, I like. _________________

Don't see either of these items happening; Barwin has been in a massive slump this season, and the Texans don't really try to use the tag. Barwin was made an offer this offseason and he rejected it, hoping to cash in on a repeat of last season, which hasn't been the case. The usual stance the Texans FO in this sort of case is to make a similar offer to the deal extended this offseason (maybe not as rich as the first offer) and allow Barwin to test the market if he desires. If he finds a deal, the Texans would be willing to let him go, knowing that Brooks Reed and Whitney Mercilius man the starting OLB roles, and finding a rotational pass rusher in the mid rounds, perhaps an undersized 4-3 DE. It's the same thing the Texans had going on last season with Mario Williams, and I can't see the Texans budging for Barwin.
Not to mention, the Texans have some cap room available, but a lot of that money has been allocated to re-up with Brian Cushing, who's slated to hit the market in 2014. The franchise tag would simply be too cumbersome for the Texans to exercise, let alone on a player who is as hot/cold as Barwin.
Jammer sounds like a tempting player, but the only way I can see him signing on is if he was moving to one of the S spots, and the Texans elected to let Glover Quin go. Quin has been having a fairly good season, so I see him as more of a "re-sign or tag" player. The Texans still have a lot of money tied into CB Jonathan Joseph, and CB Kareem Jackson has actually looked very good this season, save for the New England game. Jammer at S makes more sense than Jammer at CB; Even that would predicate a loss of a player that the Texans highly value.
One last item - If Peyton Hillis has a job next season, so does Rashard Mendenhall. Hillis has just as much baggage in regards to front office battles and locker room issues, and doesn't nearly represent the upside that Mendy has. I don't doubt your stance on Mendenhall, but the same has to hold true for Hillis; Guy is on his last legs in the NFL, and this past campaign with the Chiefs isn't helping his case for another job in the league.
------------------------------------------------------------------
Texans draft pick is OUTSTANDING. Terrance Williams would be the perfect selection for the team, as the heir apparent for Andre Johnson. _________________

an emphatic hell no to Mike Vick for the Vikings.

I agree (No to Vick!). Though, with the depth at WR in the 2nd and 3rd rounds this year, I'd prefer it if the Vikings looked at OG, NT, or MLB in the 1st and looked at WR later.
Either Alec Ogletree or John Jenkins would be better to me. |

I actually like Allen a lot there, as there is depth at DT as well in this draft. But I agree with no to Vick. He makes no sense in the team that has stated they are in a rebuilding mode and with his concussion history. _________________

I like Werner but DT is a bigger need so Nix or Richardson should be the pick. _________________

Welker leaves Brady and the playoffs for Smith and KC? Why, if it is money why not sign Bowe and not a 32 YO slot guy. |

Or have us trade down.
We could also take Cooper or Thomas at OG since that is pathetic too. _________________ John Fox

Keeping Levitre and Byrd while selecting Jarvis Jones is a very nice start. We also need upgrades at QB, WR, SS and a veteran CB.. Gilmore will be a stud but Aaron Williams isn't working at CB. |
