McCourty was going to turn out the same but he bounced back in a big way this year.
Butler was especially disheartening considering he was picked relatively high in the 2nd round, and chung looks to follow in this patter judging by his play this year.

| I played basketball with Butler at a gym around Gillette, he was there with that safety from Oakland as well. Crazy how athletic those dudes are despite not being good at the pro level. |

I knew all we needed was a good coverage safety to get our defense rollin. _________________

Hopefully we resign Talib and hopefully find a safety to complement DMC better than Gregory or Chung moving forward. |
No, he's better suited for corner. He's not that big a guy and can't cover bigger guys coming out of the backfield or split ends. But he plays both as well as you can expect and our talent at safety is significantly worse. |
DMC isn't a small corner by any standard and he's also a very good, and willing tackler.
He is one of the few CB's I'd trust to take on big RB's and TE's. Better than having DRC, Asante or DeAngelo Hall tring t tackle. _________________

After what is it now 3/4 games...how are people feeling about Talib's ability and his future here? I would love to see him stay here and watch him, Dennard, McCourty and Tavon Wilson really mesh and form a secondary that BB can be proud of for once. We have really been struggling to put a secondary together for some time. _________________

Agreed. I feel like McCourty, Dennard, and Talib could be the start of something consistent in NE. The way Dennard was keeping Andre Johnson in check, I think I he can be something special down the road.
So if Dennard and Talib stay consistent at corner, does that mean they keep McCourty at Safety? Assuming it's not a nickel or other sub package. _________________

Do people really believe that Talib was bought in with the intention of 'wait and see' to retain him or not? _________________

I tend to agree...you don't trade for a guy for half a season. Plan A was always going to be to resign him unless:
1) He really really sucked
2) He had a majorly bad attitude/influence
3) Both _________________

No coincidences there IMO. All three are key moves that improved the pass defense dramatically. _________________

Great post Tzi. Shows the growth and coaching we all were crying for after the first 6-8 weeks. As much as some of us (me) would want to attribute that to just Talib its been a total growth of our defense. _________________

To sum up: if you want a good pass defense, leave Patrick Chung handcuffed to the locker-room toilet. _________________

Whoops, actually my yardage totals for weeks 1-7 were off. I used net yards instead of gross.
Here are the correct numbers
| Code: |
CMP ATT PCT YARDS Y/A TD INT RTG
-------------------------------------------------------
Weeks 1-7 169 260 65.0 2102 8.08 16 7 99.23
Weeks 8-14 137 223 61.4 1649 7.39 6 8 78.11 |
So yeah, the improvement has been even greater than I'd said. _________________

You do if you're trying to win a Super Bowl and there's a decent chance that Derrick Martin or Marquice Cole could be logging significant snaps at corner. If they felt like Talib was the piece to put them over the top, I'm sure they'd spend a mid-round pick to win a championship. |

It'd be a very short-sighted move and very out of character for BB. I'm sure the move was made with the intention to resign him. If he does put us over the top and we do with a Championship, surely his presence on the field was a contributing factor and he would have proved that he's worth resigning.
I just cannot envision a scenario where Talib plays well and we don't resign him. Unless he's swayed by a totally ridiculous FA offer, but again, I can't just see us letting him walk. I've seen enough so far to think Talib is a long term option and should be signed to a 2nd or 3rd Tier CB contract. _________________
