I honestly don't get this response. I mean, if you favor keeping the name for various reasons, sure we can have a discussion about that. But refusing to even recognize that there's a discussion to be had? Why?

Why? I totally agree with him. The name is unbelievably inappropriate. There are some who'd be upset with the change of such a historic brand, but I think most people in the region accept the need for it to be changed.

If this was in Washington's earlier days, I'd 100% agree with getting a name change.

Now? I'm not so sure. I mean, they are a pretty storied franchise. Guess it'd be awkward to see them with a different name. I definitely do understand wanting a name change though.

FedEx Field isn't even 20 years old... Are they really thinking about getting a new stadium? I don't understand why they want the name changed, I don't think the Redskins are doing it to be disrespectful.

It's a racial slur. It doesn't matter if it's done to be disrespectful or not.

Which brings up a funny side note: Using the term to describe someone on this forum would be grounds for a warning, no?
So just change it to the Seminoles? The Seminole tribe wasn't in the DC area IIRC but if they HAVE to change it....

Oh it's talked about a lot. A of people in the DMV hate the association with the name. But the team is so darn popular that it hasn't shown up in the balance sheets.

because there isn't any racism in the name? it's just a descriptive term.

If I labeled you as a whiteskin would that be racist?

If you coined it as a derogatory term for white people and it became a commonly used slur, yes. Redskin is a commonly used derogatory term for Native Americans.

I'm not PC and I don't care at all about this. But it is a pretty messed up name.

The irony with this position, though, is that you're saying that the more firmly entrenched the name, the less we should be inclined to change it. The argument against the name is that it is such a firmly entrenched example of institutionalized racism that it is the prime example of one that needs to be changed.

These are my ideas:

Washington......

1. Tomahawks

2. Mohawks

3. Metis

4. Tribe or Tribe(s)

5. Chippewa

6. Sioux

Some of the names are the names of the most populated indigenous indian tribes in North America. Just trying some new stuff out.

Some of these (tribe-specific) names could probably fly if you got tribe approval. But honestly, if they're going to change the name from a racially questionable one, I doubt they make a small step like that. They'll probably divorce themselves entirely from the idea, assuming a change is even made.

If they change it they would just change it to "skins"

But it will never happen. Redskins and dan snyder owns the dc area.
