@Macklemore I found this topic very interesting to me because a similar incident happened in my town.

Our town's amateur lacrosse team had the team name Redmen with a similar logo that the redskins had, so our town decided to change it to something different because a lot of native indian organizations felt uncomfortable with that name.

We have to stop thinking about ourselves here, I can truly see a lot of people in the native indian community being upset at this name for ages. Someone needs to step up for them.

it is a joke that the name has stood for this long. Can't remember the guy's name who used to do Tuesday Morning QB on ESPN page 2, but he brought it up every week, especially when the NCAA mandated the name changes if you hoped to host an NCAA event.

It really should've been changed long ago and I hope it is now.

On this forum, you'd get a warning for calling Sam Bradford a redskin, but there's a thriving forum for the Redskins.

Makes no sense. History's history. Time to quit living in it and move on. The sooner they make a new name/mascot, the sooner they'll start building value in that. The Washington Bullets didn't go out of business when they changed in to the Wizards.

I support this. I always wondered why no one talked about this.

I was just talking to my friends during the playoffs about how racist the name "Redskins" is Laughing

This has been attempted many many many times already, nothing ever happens. Should it have been changed a long time ago? Yes, but I love this team and I'd be furious if they just now decide to change the name.

How bout the Washington Rhinos, Washington Sharks, Washington Cougars, Washington Cheetahs, Washington Ninjas, Snapping Turtles or whatever. Team names don't need to have anything to do with their city and naming them after political offices just seems lame.

+1

The name is racially insensitive and I agree 100%. I can absolutely see why some fans of the team would be upset, since its the moniker they've grown to love and the name is a term of affection, but its not viewed that way by some and its easy to see why. The term "redskin" was, at one point in our history, a derogatory term. Its saddens me, but a name change does make sense. Hopefully something can be found that keeps the fans happy and preserves some of the tradition of the proud franchise.

Seems like another case of people getting PC because someone else might get offended. I have no problem with a name change but I dont care either way with what happens with the name. If it is a really big issue get the native people to start a petition or something

I know this seems TOO simple, but why not just change it from REDskins to PIGskins since half the fans in the stadium dress up as pigs anyway...?

If the team opts to change its name, why not leave it to the people who own and operate the organization, Daniel Snyder and the other executives? It shouldn't happen because a politician is using political pressure to score some local brownie points. That's almost as offensive as the faux outrage and resentment he's using to get the name changed.

The Washington Snapping Ninja Turtles. What happens to Mutant Ninja Turtles once they hit 20. How hasn't this been used before is beyond me, but don't overthink it, just GO.
