How about the Washington Red Skinned Potatoes? It's a loop hole that's not racist and the logo could be a football shaped potato.
Otherwise, Washington Federals, Warriors, or Brawlers. If desperate, we could call them the Washington RGIIIs. _________________

There's really no "might" to it. People are offended. |
I honestly think their might be a higher percentage of Caucasians offended by it than actual Native Americans. The polls I remember seeing always showed a relatively small percentage of Native Americans actually wanted it changed. If a significant percentage do want it changed, then I have no problem with them changing it.
Also, I find the name Fighting Irish offensive as someone of Irish descent. Can we work on forcing Notre Dame to change their names next? |

I could never change or replace Washington Redskins in madden, for a better name.
(when I relocated team in franchise mode)
Except 1.
I once move the Washington Redskins back to Washington D.C. (which you can in the game)
And for fun, called them the
D.C. Snipers
Kept the same colors and everything, too.
It's quite fitting if any of you remember the D.C. sniper story a few years ago.
Unfortunately, Madden didn't have a sniper logo for me to use like
Anyways....THAT, would be cool.
( I would change the font of the target though...Burgundy or Gold maybe)
It's the only name change I would be on board with, in changing such a historic name such as Redskins.
I don't want no generic name like Warriors, Cougars or whatever.
There are 5000 college or professional sports teams that use the same names. No way...
But I like new and refreshing stuff, so.. _________________

I don't know what polls you're talking about, but there have been numerous petitions/protests by. Native Americans that are offended by the name. _________________

Can see both sides here... while I would be pretty sad to see a storied NFL franchise to undergo a change of identity, I can certainly understand in this politically correct era that there would be some people wanting to change it. Glad I'm not a Redskins fan, or I'd probably be really upset. Either way, while I see it happening eventually, I don't see it happening very soon.
What do you guys think the best name would be, should they change it? Some I just thought of...
Washington Generals
Washington Politicians
Washington Sentinels
Washington Revolutionaries
Washington Rebels
Washington Senators
Washington Natives (Would allow them to keep their identity, I'd imagine... don't think Natives is offensive)
Washington Seminoles (see above)
Washington Redcoats (similar name, probably wouldn't be as drastic even though it would be ironically named after a British military force we defeated for independence)
Washington Skins (see above) _________________ With much cheese,

My high school had to change their logo because of something similar. It was pretty much this:
So how a high school was forced to change this yet a professional sports team can be called the Redskins is beyond me. _________________

I see so some negative stereotypes are fair game for team names, but others aren't. Who gets to decide which ones are okay and which ones need to be changed? |

I'm sure there have been petitions, but unless they're getting hundreds of thousands of signatures, that's not exactly a large percentage of Native Americans (5.2 MM listed as either their race or one of their combination of races). Do you have links for any polls. I'll see if I can find any either way. Like I said, if a lot of Native Americans want it changed, then they should change it, but my impression has always been that there wasn't that much of an outcry over it from the Native American community.
Poll from ~9 years ago where only 9% said they found it offensive[/url]

What's racist about Fighting Irish? I'm pretty sure they aren't basing the name on stereotypes about Irish people fighting a lot. Like Fighting Illini. They're Illini. And they are going to fight. They don't fight just because its what Illini do. _________________
