Well, we all speculate but this guy says what we think and puts it into an article.

http://www.sacbee.com/2013/01/11/5106803/matthew-barrows-49ers-coordinator.html

Quote:
Roman was a defensive lineman for the Blue Streaks in the early 1990s, playing on teams that included Telesco (a wide receiver) and Caldwell (an outside linebacker). Caldwell and Roman, in fact, were roommates.

Roman hasn't interviewed for any head-coach openings to this point, but he's suddenly a hot name, especially in connection with the Jaguars job.

Quote:
On his first day as the general manager in Jacksonville, Caldwell did two things: He fired head coach Mike Mularkey and said in clear, read-my-lips fashion that Tim Tebow who played high school football in Jacksonville and was long-rumored to be heading to the Jaguars was not welcome.

"I can't imagine a scenario in which he'll be a Jacksonville Jaguar even if he's released," Caldwell said at his introductory news conference.

One of the dumbfounded reporters in the room made him repeat it.

Quote:
Roman was on board with Jim Harbaugh in choosing Colin Kae-pernick over Smith this season, and Smith realizes that Roman has passed him over once already.

In trying to figure out Smith's destination, keep track of ex-Chargers coach Norv Turner, who will be considered for offensive coordinator jobs and with whom Smith has remained close since Turner was the offensive coordinator in San Francisco in 2006.

Quote:
Asked about Roman, Smith certainly didn't sound as if he held a grudge.

The quarterback said he has "tremendous respect" for Roman and that he has all the makings of a head coach.

"I think the thing that jumps out at me is his understanding of football, offensively and defensively, because he's coached on both sides," Smith said. "He has such great knowledge of the game. I know I've learned a tremendous amount in the last year and a half with him."

The theme inside the 49ers' facility this week has been opportunity how rare and delicate it is and how quickly it can disappear. One of those with the best opportunities is Roman.

Yay! An average quarterback who should do just well enough to keep us from drafting our franchise guy!

Good thing most sportswriters don't bother to do homework on their Jaguar stories.

It is better to win than to lose IMO, progress is key.

This.
Would make us competitive and would be one scenario in which Caldwell said during the press conference about options available.

I'm not buying the report any more than any other quarterback-related report.

I'd rather have a shot at a special season than a handful of moderately successful ones.

So Alex Smith who was a bust that gave the 49ers 13 wins last year with Roman with the same team that was a perennial top-10 picking team, turned them around, and a similar team here with better weapons, and the same coordinator, whats not to like about turning this team around? Also, you draft or develop another QB/Gabbert like the 49ers did with Kaepernick, and you are golden. Alex is a long term fix, he is a stop-gap to get your guy.

Alex Smith is pretty far down the list of things that got that team 13 wins.

I wouldn't be against bringing along a young guy under Smith, but there's no Kaepernick in this draft. Blaine is already here and a better option moving forward, even if we take a quarterback high - I see no reason to waste any money on a player who really isn't going to ffer much for the price tag.

I think Henne can get us to the playoffs with our WRs, he just needs a line he has no time and always picking himself off the ground. I hope we get a stud O-lineman in FA and the draft. I think Shipley will be awesome for us next season in the slot.

If we draft a QB or bring in Smith I think this team needs to keep Henne and Gabbert and carry 3 QBs the whole season.

Henne can make more big plays than Smith, but Smith is far more consistent.

I like it.

Sign Smith
Sign o-lineman (RT or C)

Draft QB in first three rounds
Use other two top three picks on defense

Develop our own Kaep behind Smith.

Win games.

Very Happy

I fully expect a trade down in the first 2 rounds...having #33 is so huge.

Fales isn't coming out, and if he did, hes a top-3 pick.

I want Dysert, and think he'd be perfect in that sit a year role.

I would accept having Smith, but Roman is a must at this point.
