Cowboys hand play-calling duties to Bill Callahan
| Calvin Watkins (Dallas Cowboys Beat reporter) wrote: | | Jason Garrett isn't calling offensive plays. Bill Callahan is calling the plays |
Finally after a week of speculation. Garrett named Bill Callahan as OC. Really excited. We feel like Garrett is more of a head coaching material than play-calling.

| Quote: | | Jason Garrett said he'd be comfortable with Bill Callahan calling the plays and it would give him the chance to oversee in-game more. |
| Quote: | | Jason Garrett: "It's never been hell or high water that I have to call the plays." Garrett said it just worked out for him to do it since HC |
| Quote: | | Garrett said he'd prefer to have have an OC handle off, DC handle def, and ST handle ST. And let him oversee it all. |
Carlos A. Mendez @calexmendez
| Quote: | | Garrett says playcalling not decided yet. He would prefer to have OC, DC, ST handle their areas and free him up to manage team. |
| Quote: | | Garrett said he would feel comfortable with Callahan as playcaller. Indicated they'll take into account romo thoughts. |
| Quote: | | Garrett said he knows Jerry likes his HC to call plays, but that they've had discussions about it pro and con. Said its been done both ways. |
About Former and Other Coaches
| Quote: | | Garrett did not commit to Boniol as kicking coach, Robinson as wr coach or any other offensive positions. 'We'll talk about all that.' |
| Quote: | | Garrett said No. 1 thing he thought about with DC change was turnovers. Credited Ryan's work thru injuries but had to have more turnovers. |

| Quote: | | #Cowboys fans, Jason Garrett is abt to be 'walk-around' coach. Callahan remains OC leader in clubhouse. Details at 1130 on @1053thefan |

Jerry said it was always at his "insistence" that Jason Garrett continue to call plays after becoming HC. |
| Quote: | Carlos A. Mendez @calexmendez
Jerry said he hired Garrett to call the plays. But believes staff that will be in place is capable of freeing him to oversee.
Jerry said if Jimmy Robinson is not wr coach next year, its not because of performance but because of career direction.
Jerry’s money quote: “I’m being influenced by Jason’s judgment not as to what he’s not going to be doing, but what he is going to be doing.”
Jerry says Garrett doesn't have to be sold on play-calling change. “The insistence that he called the plays as well as be head coach is me."

You never know. Callahan has been a puppet for a play calling owner before. _________________

Because that would've made sense and would have been the responsible thing to do. _________________

I don't blame him, man. I know I've drastically updated my Fantasy roster, like 5 minutes before kickoff. That's kind of the same, right?
I was unaware that Callahan was even back in the pro game, figured he was still stuck in college purgatory somewhere. _________________

He was the Jets OL coach for four years. Did a pretty good job in that role. _________________

Yeah. Mostly. I wouldnt have many nickels if I had a nickel every time we ran on 3rd and 1.
We passed too much and didn't run enough eventually we became too predictable as the season went on, those amazing highlight plays you see on ESPN were mostly cause of talent alone.
This I think is a great move. Back from his Oakland days he emphazied the run more than the pass. Which is what we are dying to see in our cowboys offense as fans.
Another reason is JG couldnt really manage the entire team with his OC duties. I personally feel like he is a better walk-around coach dealing with the personnel espeically because he has been great in the drafts and mostly in free agency minus the O-line which is predicted to be fixed this off-season via draft/FA. _________________

I remember a lot of Jet fans, including myself, hoped that he would be promoted to offensive coordinator when Schotty left for STL. _________________
