You'd think this thread would be inspired by Boldin but no.
David Akers is 38 years old and it was 8 years ago that he and the Philadelphia Eagles lost Super Bowl XXXIX.
This got me thinking of players that lose a Super Bowl or multiple ones earlier in their career and then win one late.
One example I'll start off with is Punter Rick Tuten.
Tuten was a member of the Buffalo Bills 1990 team that lost Super Bowl XXV. Nine years later he got a ring as part of the Rams despite not playing in the game. He retired that year.
But perhaps the greatest example of this is Darren Sharper:
In 1997, he entered the league as a rookie with the defending champion Green Bay Packers. After losing to Elway and the Broncos, Sharper didn't see another Super Bowl media day until 12 years later.
P.S. Matt Birk was on the vaunted 98 Vikings. Another guy I'd want to see win it.[/img]

I think there's a lot of players who went 6-7 year stretches inbetween Super Bowl appearances and won their 2nd time.
Sharper's 12 year gap is pretty special.
MIKE HORAN
Horan made the Super Bowl in 86, 87 and 89 with the Broncos, losing all of them. Then in 99, a year after Elway retired, he won his first ring. A 10 year gap between Super Bowls and 13 years between his first appearance and first victory.
Funny story, Keenan McCardell got a ring with the 91 Skins despite not seeing the field and then won another 11 years later with the Bucs.

In 9 NFL seasons, Don Beebe appeared in 6 Super Bowls. Which is simply insane.
Mike Lodish also appeared in 6 Super Bowls, but in an 11 year span, winning back to back Championships with the Broncos.
But those aren't tremendous gaps. Beebe won a Championships two seasons after losing the 4th title game with the Bills while Lodish won 3 seasons after losing in 94.
The greatest storyline here is of course Beebe vs. Lodish in Super Bowl XXXII

See Mike Horan. 
For a QB that is a record, but Brady could break it seeing as it's been 9 years next season.
Like I said though, Darren Sharper 12 year gap.

Deon Grant. Patriots beat the Panthers in Super Bowl XXXVIII when Grant was a member of the Panthers. Grant got his revenge when he won last year with the Giants.

Rod Woodson lost with the 1995 Steelers and won with the 2000 Ravens... Then lost with the 2002 Raiders...
Charles Woodson lost with the 2002 Raiders and won with the 2010 Packers.

This is who immediately came to mind without putting any thought into it.
Kicker Matt Bahr won the super bowl in the 1979 season with Pittsburgh and didn't win again until 1990 with the Giants.
Jim McMahon won with the Bears in 1985 and not again until 1996 when he was a backup in Green Bay.

Not really the same thing, but Ricky Proehl won on the '99 Rams, then lost on the '01 Rams, lost on the '03 Panthers, then won again on the '06 Colts.
Another long timer was Rodney Harrison who lost on the '94 Chargers and won on the '03 Patriots. |
