Rob Gronkowski is set to return to the operating table, but it doesn't involve his troublesome forearm.

NFL.com's Albert Breer reported Wednesday that the New England Patriots tight end will need back surgery, according to a source briefed on his status. Surgery tentatively is set for mid-June and will be performed by Dr. Robert Watkins, according to Breer.

Gronk's arm is healthy now but he will need to undergo a back surgery to repair a disc and will likely miss a part of training camp.

Quote:
The agent for New England Patriots tight end Rob Gronkowski told a Miami sports radio station Thursday that the upcoming surgery on his client’s back is not serious and its recovery timetable will be "very comparable to the amount of time he would miss" after a fourth surgery on his forearm.

Agent Drew Rosenhaus described the back surgery as “preventative maintenance” and referred to it as "killing two birds with one stone" during his interview with WQAM.

"In Rob's case, it's not a serious back surgery, it's unrelated to the original surgery that he had as a junior in college," said Rosenahus, referring to the injury that kept Gronk off the field in 2009 and played a part in his falling to the second round of the 2010 NFL draft. "That's totally [fine] and recovered perfectly. This is a new injury and it's minor; it's not as significant.

"It's certainly, as I said, the recovery time will be consistent with the recovery time that he's going to be out anyway, so I don't think it's a big deal. ... Although he needs it, he had it for a while and he's been able to function."

Expected 12 week recovery time for Gronk puts him right around Week 1, but #Patriots could keep him out anywhere from 1-6 games to be safe

Rob Gronkowski will begin the preseason on the PUP list, per source. Expected. But important to know it will happen (as opposed to likely)

What we do not know on Gronk: Will he start regular season on PUP list? That's the big one. Team waiting/seeing. Told, "He could be ready"

He could be outta the league in a few years. Back problems are no joke and he's had them since college.

Him having spinal stenosis was the rumor that caused his big drop in the draft to begin with. Missed a year of college with a similar back problem. Him relapsing with 'chronic back pain' means it's probably an appropriate time to be panicking about his long-term status in the league.

I called Gronkowski injury prone earlier this off-season and was called a troll for it. Can I assume I can safely say this now? Because he really seems to be injury prone.

Believe me, I'm pretty damn close to hitting that 'panic' button. He looked like he was having some trouble bending last year to grab low throws before he broke his arm. At the time I chalked it up to a hip issue that he was reported to be dealing with, but it makes more sense if it was his back. Sad
Though it's important to note that the issues he's experienced aren't consistent with stenosis, as far as we know, so let's not start irresponsible rumors about it.

DDT'ing people on stage isn't helping things either...

But I digress. Gronk is such an amazing talent. I hope he can get healthy because he has so much potential to become an all time great with the pace he is on. It would be a shame to see such a promising career derailed so early by injuries.

Is there anything he isn't going to have surgery on this offseason?
