No surprise here, but Buffalo Bills fans must've hoped for one.

The Bills and Jairus Byrd have not made progress on a new contract, and he will not report to St. John Fisher College this weekend for the start of training camp, two sources with knowledge of the stalemate have told me.

http://blogs.buffalonews.com/press-coverage/2013/07/sources-jairus-byrd-wont-report-for-training-camp-this-weekend.html

The period for the team to sign him to a long-term deal has passed so he can't get one this season, but he still won't sign the 1-year franchise tag contract and join the team.

While in a real "hold-out" I side with teams, in a tender situation where the player isn't under contract, I'm on the player's side. Byrd has made no commitment to Buffalo that he is backing out of, he is just refusing to show up just because the Bills made him a tender offer. I get the reason for the franchise tag, and thankfully it's limited, but I don't like the concept overall of forcing someone into a deal.

Friggin pay the man already. This bs about safeties aren't that important in the Bills scheme, they want to see how he does this year... Confused

For a team that has the cap room and can't lure quality FA's without overpaying this should be automatic.

He'll be coming to the Pats.

Can't beat 'em, Join 'em.

Seriously though, this is ridiculous by the Bills. It looks like the decision to use the Franchise on Byrd instead of Levitre back fired.

I think the best POA for Buffalo would have been to Franchise Levitre and sign Byrd - though signing Byrd should have happened a LONG time ago.

Still, this is tremendous news for the Pats, who play Bills Week 1.

You'll make 6-7 million in 2013 and you make a holdout?

c'mon man!

And if he blows his knee out and can never play again? He'll have $6-7m instead of $15m+ guaranteed that he can likely get.

I don't blame him in the slightest. If they want him long-term, then show him.

The Bills can not give an extension, since the deadline is past

That's kinda their fault for tagging him and NOT getting a deal done then, isn't it?

It is true that the bills are incompetant, but Byrd wants to be the highest-paid safety

I saw the comments of Thomas of the seahawks and Warren Sapp, and they say it was ridiculous!

Like the other poster said, it's their fault for not getting it done sooner.

Of course all players want to be the highest paid -- the Bills simply need to give him a fair (note: not "fair" to them, but to both sides) offer, which I'm sure both sides want.

They screwed the pooch on this and now they are laying in the bed they made.
