He most certainly had the option of hitting him high. He was clearly driving on the tight end and chose to aim for his legs rather than his head. Whether or not it was because of the rule changes, no one aside from Swearinger knows.

People need to calm down about the rule changes in this incident.

I thought it was common knowledge that to take down someone who is much bigger than you, you often go low; just look at every single cut block made by a RB on an onrushing DE/OLB. That is just what Swearinger was doing to Keller, only on the opposite side of the ball.

Hardly relevant to this topic. Not very classy.

Terrible injury for the Dolphins and Keller. Oh well fingers crossed he'll be back for next season.

He'll still be part of the team, he'll just be on IR, so he should.

This sucks for Keller and Swearinger.

Keller just got hit in a bad spot, and Swearinger just went low. Not an illegal or dirty hit, just unfortunate. I don't know if he's been fined or not, but I don't believe he should at all.

Even if Keller comes back, there's a good chance he'll never be the same. This very well could be career ending one way or another.

Not a dirty hit at all but could have been avoided, a player like Swearinger that is a big safety and known for making jacked up hits should be able to aim a little higher than the knees. He could have hit him in the back area.

No hard feelings because I honestly don't believe he was trying to hurt Keller but it could have been avoided is all I am saying.

Most tight ends are bigger than the defenders tackling them so I think they are hit lower more often. As for the guys getting mad at the NFL for making the helmet to helmet hits... I don't blame the nfl I blame the players for the lawsuits they all file. it's ridiculous. But I hope nothing but the best for Keller.

So instead of a busted knee you have a busted head? I know a lot of football players are pretty dumb, but I think the brain is more important than a knee for the longterm future of a person.

I meant to say "as for the guys getting mad at the nfl for making the helmet to helmet rule" if it wasn't for all the lawsuits I think that the nfl wouldnt have been so strict about it

Instead of a busted knee or a busted head, players could just tackle properly. That would remove the vast majority of injuries stemming from contact.

Terrible for Keller, who I'm sure was hoping to resurrect his career in Miami, and for the Dolphins who are left without any sort of experienced TE (I wonder if they fancy trading for Shiancoe... nah, probably just wait for him to be cut). Hope Dion Sims can step up and produce.

This sucks. I have mixed feelings about this.

On one hand, I feel like if you're about to hit a defenseless receiver, you shouldn't go for the knees. I know you get fined if you hit him in the head, but it's not like you can't go for the chest or the waist. This is their livelihood. Dustin Keller is in a contract year. He essentially lost miliions of dollars because of this. I'm not sure if he has a family, but this has a direct impact on the future for him and his family.

On the other hand, the defenders career is at stake too. You worry too much about how to tackle someone and you end missing tackles, you start getting the rep of a poor tackler, and it impacts your future contract. Although going for the knees seems wrong, it is legal and it's an effective method of getting someone to the ground.

Idk. It's just an unfortunate situation.
