We all knew he was signing. The biggest suprise is that there was no tag provision in the tender meaning hell be on the bills again no matter what Very Happy either franchise tagged or a new contract

Horrible spot for Byrd...Awesome safety stuck on bad team and now might ever get paid...I really hope he stays healthy and has awesome season with Bills and gets paid well like he should with a nice long contract...

Vindictive much? I don't like hold outs either, but look no further than Dustin Keller to see why guys do it, he took a 1 year deal and now that might be the final nfl paycheck he cashes.

Yeah and now he doesn't know the defense and is not in football shape. He shouldn't see the field regardless. Everyone has been working and learning this defense since OTAs. He shouldnt expect to walk in and start with just two weeks of work. He just won't be up to par no matter how good he is.

You act as though he's done nothing but sit on his couch eating cheetos and drinking mountain dew Laughing

Still got two more preseason games and weeks, I'm sure he'll be good to go once the season rolls around. Certainly better than any other option the Bills currently have.
Id rather just sit him a couple weeks. He didn't sign his tender to avoid the punishment of being fined, but he still should be punished for going around the system. I've been saying he should be benched for as many preseason games he has skipped out on. Williams and Searcy are more than capable of holding down the fort.

Huzzah! Slightly sooner than I expected. Hopefully the Bills and Byrd can get a long term deal done after this season.

Benching him for 2 regular season games is not a good way to sway him to sign a long term deal.

Did you guys switch defenses? If not, why would he not know the playbook?

Not me considering Eugene Parker is his agent and that guy always seems to advise his his clients to take things to the extreme. I wasn't actually expecting him back until at least the end of the preseason considering, and I'd wager that the fact he signed now was him telling his agent: "Enough is enough. I just want to play."

And throughout the negotiations, Byrd has been nothing but respectful, even tweeting about how great the Buffalo fans are.

I think he's a great player and a great guy, who just took the advice of one the most vile agents in the business.

Add Philly to that list too. He could re-unite with Chip and Patty Chung. Plus the Eagles are around $20M under the cap right now.

For all those hoping he hits the open market, I'd like to point out that the Bills will be able to franchise him again next year for less than he was apparently asking for in yearly salary.

And the only other at all high profile player scheduled to high free agency in 2014 is Center Eric Wood. (And considering all OL players are tendered at the same price, Wood is all but taken out of the running for a franchise tag.)

So I really only see four realistic scenarios for Byrd in 2014.

1. He's tagged again by the Bills and plays for them in 2014.
2. He's signed long term by the Bills.
3. He's tagged, but pressures the team into trading him.
4. He gets injured this year or destroys his value in some other way.

So teams with a lot of cap space next year hoping to grab a top quality safety for nothing but cash will probably have to look elsewhere.

Entirely new system. Mike Pettine is the new DC. His defense is the opposite of what we have been running. Plus terminology is different.

No player should be bigger than the team
