New York Jets cornerback Antonio Cromartie went down in practice Thursday with a noncontact knee injury and was taken for an MRI exam, according to two league sources.

The results of the MRI weren't immediately known, but the team is concerned it could be a serious injury. One source described it as a hyperextension, but that hasn't been confirmed by the team.

Football Injury Dictionary wrote:
A hyperextended knee occurs when the knee joint is forced to extend forcefully beyond its normal range of motion. Normally, this is simply painful and can cause swelling for one to several days or weeks. The real problem occurs when ligament damage occurs which may require surgery. A severe hyperextension frequently results in damage to the ACL. Hyperextension itself rarely causes more than a few missed games.

If Cromartie is out for any extended period of time, the Jets are not in good shape. Cromartie has played 100% of the team's defensive snaps this year and is really the only proven CB on the team. If Cromartie and first round pick Dee Milliner (hamstring) are injured, the starting CBs for the Jets will likely be former practice squad player Darrin Walls and umm...Bueller...?

Initial reports say the injury is not serious, and there is no major damage. Still, his status is uncertain for this week.

If I had to guess, he misses two weeks.

I'm told that Antonio Cromartie's knee injury is not season ending. Not overly serious. However, his status vs Steelers is in doubt #nyj

Very good news, although Manish said the same exact thing about Antwan Barnes a few days ago and that didn't turn out too well.

Cromartie is as tough as they come. He admitted to basically playing the first two games this year on one hip. Cromartie has never missed a game in his NFL career due to injury, although he sat out the last game of the 2010 season when the Jets rested their starters.

Glad to hear this isn't major. If he doesn't play vs. the Steelers, obviously it helps us, but I wouldn't ever wish an injury on a guy and I don't like to see them happen. Hopefully he gets back to full health quickly.

I mean, on one hand, it's kind of unfortunate his stellar play will always be overshadowed by the kids he has to some people.

On the other hand, he uses both his hands to count the number of kids and baby mommas.

I'd be pretty surprised if he played. Cro gets a bad rap, but he's actually been a tough SOB with the Jets. I hope he can go, but I think it's a longshot.

Tough break. How do you guys think the rest of your DBs will do against Pittburgh's offense on Sunday?

If Cromartie doesn't play, not well at all. We're already without Dee Milliner, so you're looking at a trio of Darrin Walls, Kyle Wilson, and Isaiah Trufant at corner.
