Due to teams like the Saints and 49ers having to go on the road to play against teams with inferior records, the NFL has said it will look into changing the playoff seeding format. The change would still give the top 2 teams a bye but the wild card round home teams would be decided by overall record instead of giving the home game to the division winners.

I am in favour of the current format which gives division winners a home game. Job #1 is to win the division. If the Saints wanted a home game - they should have won their division and they had the opportunity to do so. Same goes for the 49ers. Winning the division should mean something and the fans should be rewarded with a home game. The winning percentage of home teams in the playoffs is .675 so it's a distinct advantage.

I think the NFL should consider changing the playoff format to ensure the best 12 teams get into the playoffs. I think the Wild Card teams (seeds 5 & 6 in each conference) should be decided by overall record regardless of conference. This year it would mean that the Cardinals at 10-6 would have made it over the Chargers at 9-7. Division winners should be rewarded but ultimately the best teams should make it to the playoffs.

Discuss!

I'd say the first round is fine (reward division winners). I'd consider reseeding the next round in the case that you save a situation where a 1 seed plays a super great wild card team where the 2nd seed get some mediocre division winner.

Good. Always found that weird. Winning your division gives you a confirmed spot in the playoffs, why exactly does it have to give you a home game?

Cardinals are in the NFC, Chargers are in the AFC.

would love it. not fair that the saints have to go on the road in bad conditions because the eagles are in a crap division.

i think he meant to get rid of the wildcard being just best record and not take conference into account...not sure how that would work. but i dont see why a team in the hardest division getting a better record then a team in one of the weakest dont deserve to get in.

its a sticky siuation with the division winner. im on the fence with the division winner going because it does make the divisions a big deal. but the home field advantage doesnt make any sense.

Leave it the way it is.

You can make the "argument" that you should be rewarded with the playoff spot & home playoff game if you win your division.

If your division is top notch & beats up on themselves, even with low records they should get the home playoff game IMO

Win your division if u wanted a Gareenteed home playoff game.

To the ARI situation, it sucks, but its not going to change. NFL likes multiple teams being in the hunt come week 17

I like the idea.

Mediocre teams in bad divisions already get to go to the playoffs if they win the division, automatically, but they shouldn't also get rewarded with home field advantage. That's too much of an advantage for a team that could possibly be capitalizing on the fact that their division was so bad.

But it is kind of broken.

Stop being such a purist as if these playoffs rules were given by God to Moses.

It was an arbitrary idea by some guys to give home field advantage to division winners over wild cards, regardless of their records, so it's a rule that can be changed.

In the NBA divisional winner is guaranteed a top four seed, but if the 5th seed has a better record, they get home court advantage. The NFL should do something like that, no need to reseed after every round or what not.

I'm on the fence with this. On one hand, I can see where people are coming from when they say a home playoff game is a reward for winning your division, but isn't the reward really the automatic playoff berth? The Packers won their division with an 8-7-1 record, which puts them in over a 10-6 Cardinal team. Isn't that already a reward? Why should they get a home playoff game, too?

Strongly against this. Winning your division ensures a home playoff game. Want to play at home? Win the division. Elsewise, be happy you made the playoffs. Hey, if you are the 5th seed, still an outside shot at a home game.
