I agree, but it probably won't be, considering the NFL today is all about fixing what ain't broke.

It's about more money point blank. If they do it people will be upset for a year or two, then it'll pass and be the norm.

Due to teams like the Saints and 49ers having to go on the road to play against teams with inferior records, the NFL has said it will look into changing the playoff seeding format. The change would still give the top 2 teams a bye but the wild card round home teams would be decided by overall record instead of giving the home game to the division winners.

I am in favour of the current format which gives division winners a home game. Job #1 is to win the division. If the Saints wanted a home game - they should have won their division and they had the opportunity to do so. Same goes for the 49ers. Winning the division should mean something and the fans should be rewarded with a home game. The winning percentage of home teams in the playoffs is .675 so it's a distinct advantage.

I think the NFL should consider changing the playoff format to ensure the best 12 teams get into the playoffs. I think the Wild Card teams (seeds 5 & 6 in each conference) should be decided by overall record regardless of conference. This year it would mean that the Cardinals at 10-6 would have made it over the Chargers at 9-7. Division winners should be rewarded but ultimately the best teams should make it to the playoffs.

Discuss!

Couldn't you also say "if you wanted a home game you should have won more games"...and wouldn't that make more sense?

If the division is that important, then maybe they should award the division to whichever team does best WITHIN the division....ala the 2010 Raiders.

You also realize that you contradict yourself by saying division winners should be in, but ultimately the 12 best teams should go in, which isn't always going to include a team from every division.

It's bad enough we get 8 win division winners from bad divisions getting in over 10 win teams from the top division in football, but then we compound it by ALSO giving them a home game....ludicrous.

Which is why the best solution, which for some reason isn't very popular, is to add 2 playoff teams from each conference, get rid of the damn bye, and play some football....home field is the advantage, we don't need a bye week as well. It's also better to have to include some bad 7-9 teams once in a while to get massacred by a #1 seed, than to not include very capable 10-6 teams (almost always from good divisions).

The majority of you that think 6 is perfect and are afraid of becoming like the NBA are off your rocker...the NBA has 82 games to separate yourself, the NFL only has 16, so the difference betweens seeds #4-8 is usually very minimal and the schedules are so unbalanced it makes perfect sense to have more playoff teams, the NBA should be the league with 6 if anyone...it won't water it down....if you're upset about 7-9 teams getting in, big deal they get crushed in the 1st round, on the other hand it gives SB capable 10-6 teams a chance they deserve....and more football for everyone.

There's also the fact that division winners DO get left out in the current format...teams tie and it comes down to some ridiculous tie breaker when both teams deserve to go.

No.

But they should add two more teams (per conference).

No. They don't need to be the NBA. I think 6 is perfect. In terms of number of playoff teams, the NFL has it the best of the major sports.

PIT @ NE
BAL @ DEN
AZ @ CAR
CHI @ SEA

You wouldn't want to watch those games this weekend?

Im a Steeler fan, and wouldn want to see them playing the Pats.

So you're the kind of guy if you were a Seahawk fan a few years back and let's say the RAms won the tie breaker, you'd be saying "I don't even want to watch my team play the Saints"? Plus, weren't you upset about how the Chargers beat the Chiefs? Are you saying you're grateful for the bad refereeing, so you wouldn't have to watch your beloved steelers humiliate themselves in Foxboro? The Pats are hardly a juggernaut...

No. Absolutely not.

The only way to "change the seeding format" and assure that the team with the best record gets the home game is to realign the league into two conferences. Otherwise....whats the point of winning a division if you don't get at least one home game ??

to ummm...make the playoffs.

Because a few years ago New Orleans couldn't figure out how to tackle Marshawn Lynch

at the end of it all, you make the playoffs you are supposed to be able to win on the road regardless of seed

New Orleans did it, San Fran did it twice, if you are the better team that day you will find a way to win. I don't think it matters cause its one game, its not like its a series against that team. You have ONE game to win, in order to move on. If you can't do that you don't deserve to hoist the Lombardi trophy

7 teams from each conference
1 bye
Division earns a spot in the playoffs
Next three best records
Playoffs seeded by overall record
Division winners get tie-breaker over identical record non-division winner if they didn't play each other

That's how I'd do it, I think.
