Possible, but somewhat unlikely. The Titans' GM, Ruston Webster, is in Locker's corner and would likely have made that clear to Whisenhunt. Webster was pretty much 100% in charge of the hiring process.

Time will tell.

It truly shocks me that as on offensive minded coach, he chose the Titans gig over the Lions. The Stafford to Calvin Johnson duo is a hell of a combo to get to work with, on top of the roster having better talent from top to bottom. Money couldn't have been an issue here, something else has to have been the issue. I'd really like to know what it was.

There's a number of ways to look at it.

Perhaps the Titans plan to draft a QB and that is more appealing to him than being stuck with Stafford who won't be going anywhere.

The Titans aren't without talent so its subjective to think the Lions are better top to bottom.

The 3-4 was apparently a consideration.

He has ties to the area.

Both teams were 7-9. It's silly to suggest either is better top to bottom.

Sounds like the Titans spent some bigboy money to land Ken Whisenhunt

I can only whish the best to Whiz!

He was my favourite for our HC position last year, and was thrilled to get him as an OC, though it would always be a 1 year rental.

I think he's a good coach, and obviously a bright offensive mind.
His playcalling this year was a little up and down, perhaps a bit too conservative for my taste, but it's actually nice to see someone who can invest in the running game and is willing to live and die in the trenches.

Anyways, I hope he doesn't take too many people away from San Diego, especially Joe D'Allisandris (O-line coach) and Frank Reich (QB coach), who have been essential for our success this year.

He will probably be fired in a few years. He's stuck on a mediocre team that uses the hopefully we get lucky strategy and 99% of the time that leads to the coach being fired.

I'm pretty happy Wisenhunt didn't go to the Lions. The Cardinals were a darn good team and only getting better when Wisenhunt was there with Warner. Their defense was always solid at worst, and their offense was good without a great line and without a great running game.

Wisenhunt coaching Stafford, Johnson and Bush would have been downright scary.

As far as the Titans, I think he'll have some success there. Locker is better than every single quarterback Wisenhunt had in Arizona other than Warner, Johnson has the potential to be and has been an elite back, and the Titans have some receiving options and pieces in place. I wouldn't be surprised if the Titans win 10 games next year. That division is going to be tough to win with the Texans getting a new coach, the Colts and now Wisenhunt in Tennessee.

Caldwell may actually be very good for them. He's great at working with QBs but poor at play calling. If he can get a good OC, I think he'll help Stafford out a lot.

That doesn't make any sense... this new ownership has shown so far that their trying to change what used to be the norm.

Going outside of the usual Titans connection is a BIG step.

Surprised he didn't go to the Lions instead.

The problem with the Lions position is that everyone automatically assumes that the Lions have a ton of talent and just need a better coach to suddenly break out. To me this translates to a job where there will be an almost immediate expectation of success.

He's interviewing again today with upper management and won't be leaving. Cool

A 1-15 season tends to create that kind of lack of confidence that you're seeing in this thread.

Wasn't that the year the had no Manning and had to bring Kerry Collins out of retirement?

Well yeah that's the point. Without Manning he did nothing.

Personally I think no coach in the league would have been able to get that team to more than 3-4 wins tops.
