Something to keep in mind when considering a possible trade back.
For the first time ever we are seeing the FULL result of the new CBA rookie wage scale. Nearly 2/3 of the 2011 1st rd picks are likely to get the team friendly 5th year picked up. 2nd round picks are signed to 3 year deals.
This makes #32 worth 2 more years at a team friendly price compared to #33. That makes it worth reaching for a mid second round player that you feel strongly about at the end of the 1st, a more palatable option IMO than getting an extra 4th.
If front offices are smart (and Elway seems to be) they will realize this and the price to trade back into the 1st just went up. Broncos could capitalize. _________________ When you base your opinions off of facts instead of searching for facts that support your opinions you will find yourself often the contrarian but rarely the fool. |

Bit of an innacuracy here. Second round picks (like ALL rookies) still get 4 yea deals.
Moore and Franklin are going into their 4th year, which is their contract year.
Wolfe and Osweiler have two years left. _________________

The latest CBA makes rooki contracts tricky. First-round contracts are different from second-round contracts mainly through the amount of guaranteed money and signing bonuses. All drafted players are assured a 4-year contract at, at least, the league minimum. But first-round picks will usually get a 3 year guaranteed contract while second-round picks might only get a year or two fully guaranteed.
For QBs, the difference is trickier. This position usually takes longer to learn so a longer contract is valuable. A first-round pick has an optional fifth year that a second-round pick doesn't have. The CBA requires all players get a 4-year contract but a team has an option of a fifth year for players drafted in the first round.
With a starting QB getting about $12-15M/year (elite QBs get more), the first-round's fifth-year option can be a saving of millions of dollars.
The Bronco's draft position at #31 will look attractive to teams wanting to draft a QB in the second-round. |

Good insight. Thanks for pointing this out. I had not fully comprehended the added value late 1st round picks now have in terms of contract length and value. |
