http://thinkprogress.org/default/2014/06/18/3450333/in-landmark-decision-us-patent-office-cancels-trademark-for-redskins-football-team/

Quote:
The United States Patent and Trademark Office has canceled six federal trademark registrations for the name of the Washington Redskins, ruling that the name is “disparaging to Native Americans” and thus cannot be trademarked under federal law that prohibits the protection of offensive or disparaging language.

What this means: They will now appeal, if they lose, the team name will change.

Until then, fire up that cafepress T-shirt business you've wanted to do, Laughing

Mod note - This topic is pretty much out of the bounds of our forum rules, but we are trying to keep it open. Please get back on topic to something somewhat football related or this will get locked. Stop discussing the Fighting Irish, the Indians and other team names. Stop bringing up other slurs. Stop debating whether you think the name is offensive or not.

Will this force the Washington Redskins to change their name? Will the NFL appeal? Is there a way for the team to keep the logo and change the name to something else? Etc.

I do think the name should change, eventually, but this action reeks of hypocrisy. Where was this ruling last year? Five years ago? Ten years ago?

Nowhere. But now that it's become a "big" story, now, suddenly, they choose to revoke the patent?

I'm offended by all the racist usernames being used on this website. I demand these insensitive "redskins" usernames be removed immediately!

Seriously though, this was eventually going to happen. The Donald Sterling incident just helped expedite it.

Most notably, the Redskins lost this case back in 1992, but Snyder won on a technicality in 1999 on appeal. The current case was filed back in 2006.

Let's try to keep this within forum rules guys. I know everybody wants to talk about this subject, but it won't take much to get it locked.

The more this issue continues to be talked about, the worse it is for the organization and Snyder. Just change the name to stop the discussion. The capital city changed their NBA team name for a negative reason as well (and they were actually ahead of the game, since there was little discussion about it). Do we continue to talk about that? No.

Unfortunately that's how things work, compadre. Think about Donald Sterling. Dude had been a bigot for years and instituted rampant discrimination in his housing projects. But the NBA didn't do a damn thing until Sterling's latest offense caught fire with the media.

Haha what? This has been a story since the 90s. How is it a big story now?

If the Redskins are forced to change their names, I guess every Indian related sports team will be next?

The word "Indian" isn't considered a racist word.

Exactly, the term "Redskin" is a racial slur, which is why so many are opposed to the use of it.

EDIT: though, I could see why someone doesn't like the term "Indian" when referencing Native Americans.
