I think it is strange that all the polls I have seen more than 75% want to keep the name. Once again the government wants to step in and go against what americans want. This is going to be a huge problem for all sports from elementary schools all the way to the pros. A lot of schools a ready have very tight budgets and know they will want the schools to have new uniforms and change the logos on all the fields and courts. CRAZY!!

Is that 75% of Native Americans? Doesn't really matter what non-Native Americans want. That commercial that aired in a few major cities was pretty powerful. I can't get to it here at work. I recommend looking it up. Searching for "Anti Redskins Commercial" should do the trick.

No one needs to change the logo just because it lost the trademark. What it will ultimately mean if the appeal loses as well is that anyone can sell "Redskins" merchandise. Which will affect the NFL/Nike 10000x more than schools...

Correct me if I'm wrong but, I believe merchandise is one of the revenue streams that is used to calculate the salary cap. So, it affects the players too, including those not even on the team.

The Trademark Trial and Appeal board reported that they found that 39% of Native Americans they surveyed found the name offensive. I'd say that's a pretty significant portion of the population.

If that statistic is accurate, this is kind of a no-brainer.

I can't imagine 39% of Irish-Americans are offended by the Notre Dame Fighting Irish or any of the other mascots that could be considered somewhere between offense and 'in poor taste'.

I guess this means Bob Costas will have another one of his patented "I'm smarter than you" political commentaries the next time he's on TV?

I'm glad ESPN finally learned that Rick Riley is useless, hopefully NBC wises up and puts an end to these Bob Costas monologues...

The word "Indian" isn't considered a racist word.

People will find a way.

The United States Patent and Trademark Office has canceled six federal trademark registrations for the name of the Washington Redskins, ruling that the name is “disparaging to Native Americans” and thus cannot be trademarked under federal law that prohibits the protection of offensive or disparaging language.

What this means: They will now appeal, if they lose, the team name will change.

Until then, fire up that cafepress T-shirt business you've wanted to do, Laughing
On the face of it, this shows no respect for the Rule of Law. Not unexpectedly, it clearly denies the Redskins Due Process.

Seriously though, this was eventually going to happen. The Donald Sterling incident just helped expedite it.
In the Land of 1984 to call a person "black" is not an insult but to call them "Redskins" is? What a load.

Apparently this subject cannot be discussed in any but the most trivial way. Unless you say something meaningless, don't say it?

There's nothing racial about that.

People whining about a name change that frankly should of occurred decades ago need to get a grip. Especially since if the names I listed about were swapped out as the Washington ......?....., you'd be outraged. For once think outside the small boxes of what most Americans view as "protected cultures".

My apologies to those offended by any of the names above. Never once has Redskins been posted on this site and thought of in that way IMO. Just trying to make a point.
